How to build a coop - you CAN do it!

FROM: Cynthia, Event Host

This will be a workshop to discuss what makes a good coop, and a demonstration of the tools and skills you need to get the job done.

Really super-basic, how-to-build stuff.  We'll discuss site location, choice of building materials, basic design, basic tool use.  If you think you can't do it yourself, I'm going to try to convince you otherwise.  This is as much about personal growth and ownership of your project as it is the building of your coop.

I will use my site and coop as an example, but if attendees will bring a site map of their location, and a list of special circumstances or needs/wants, we will try to turn out a workable building plan by the end of the meeting.

YOU CAN DO THIS!

And even if you can't, it will let you know what you're getting when you pay someone else to do it.

Cynthia thank you so much for a wonderful meeting! I feel totally empowered to build my own coop. I appreciate you going over the basics of construction and tools as well as sharing your tips on what you would do differently. Nice meeting everyone. Hopefully there's another meeting soon.

Thank you Cynthia for hosting, it was very informative and you have a beautiful yard, coop, garden etc.. I am hoping you can tell me the name of the book you referred to that was written in the 20's that can be downloaded online. Thanks!!

Welcoming and informative. I liked seeing it does not have to be high maintenance and fussy to have a successful chicken coop.

Very very good, this is my first meetup, it turns out to be a super, wonderful experience. She is very friendly, informative, she pointed out things to do and not to do which is very valuable , thanks Cynthia and Brandy very much. I think Cynthia's coop is built very nicely, much better than the store bought one. For the quality of the cyder wood, the size of the coop , automated water system and bedding, and the fig tree shade on top of the coop. Wish everyone has a chance to see it

If you want location and planning help another option is to bring a print out of your plot from google earth. Here is how. It is good to add half of your neighbor's yards too, as many set backs are related to your neighbors house and not just the property lines.

    http://www.rootsimple.com/2012/01/how-to-design-a-garden-step-ii-using-google-earth-to-draw-up-a-plan/

I'll be bringing a white board so we can brainstorm some locations. Look into sketch up too.

I posted this in the backyard flock disease meetup instead! But posting here now - I am so so sad that I have to cancel my RSVP. My husband has to work and my baby sitters (my in laws) are going to be out of town so I will have to be home with my 3 young children. Please hold this again!!! Please please!! My husband can make Sundays too! :) but any day will work.

Some last minute points: * If you've changed your plans, or think there's a good chance you might not make it, please give up your spot - there's a big waiting list and I'd love to see 30 people actually attend.
** I have chairs for about 12 people, and shade will be in short supply so wear a hat.
**** Please feel free to bring snacks/drinks - I'll be too busy prepping tools to be a fabulous hostess.
*** I'm happy to go overtime if there are lots of questions - but I do want to start on time at 9 a.m. We have a lot to go over.

Can't wait - see you all here!

p.s. AS ALWAYS, PLEASE TAKE STEPS TO ENSURE BIOSECURITY. WEAR NON-CHICKENY CLOTHES AND SHOES. NONE OF US WANT TO SHARE OUR HENS' COOTIES WITH OTHER FLOCKS.

The school garden has a wonderful coop built out of recycled building materials and it has a green roof. Would like to get some ideas for improving the current coop.

    • Roberta K.

      Nancy, is this Michelterona?

      July 7, 2014

    • Nancy P.

It sure is! I arrived this morning to let the hens out and was greeted with a new food station. Our old one had died of a case of poor engineering and decay. The new one is quite clever in it's design.

oops. I meant - Hi! I don't know if I can do a second meeting - we'll have to wait and see how this one goes. If possible I will try to make it a Sunday if there is another one.

It's our first time with the group and we are looking forward to it!! We don't own any chickens, but plan to in the near future. We've been asked to build a chicken coop for my aunts new chickens and I can't wait to get started!

Perfect timing - we are planning to build a bigger coop. Our last coop was a hacked Ikea bunk bed (a version of this design: http://www.ikeahackers.net/2009/06/ikea-home-for-chicks.html )

    June 23, 2014

  • Diana M.

So excited for this! Thanks for organizing.

Wow! I am so excited to attend! Thank you, thank you for organizing this :D !

    June 23, 2014

  • Laura B.

hi Cynthia, thanks for scheduling this workshop. Awesome idea! The system does not put you as the event host, so I'm going to go ahead and make that change, if that is ok with you.
Also, let me know the number of people you can accommodate at your place to add a limit. I have the feeling this will be a full event! :)

    June 18, 2014

  • Cynthia

If anyone interested will let me know a good/bad time I'll try to schedule around everyone's summer plans. Definitely NOT 4th of July weekend. Give me some open dates and I'll figure out what works best for a number of us. Let's get building!
