Come to the meetup this sun in burbank and i can show you what i do and you can buy some grains to try. I bought way too much this month! I can also give you bees for your neighbor.

    April 12, 2013

    • Grove P.

Ok see you on Sunday then, but I don't think my neighbor need the bees now. Thank you.

  • Roberta K.

I have seen a problem with insects before but birds have been an issue.

Please help! Where can I get the sprouting instruction? My wife could not make it to this even. She has been sprouting seed in a glass jar. Now the weather get warmer, the sprout get moldy easy.

    April 10, 2013

    • Roberta K.

The trays are still tricky. if you are sprouting for a short period i suggest using 5 gallon strainer bags. You can rinse the seeds and the water drips completely out.

      1 · April 10, 2013

    • Grove P.

Thank you for your response. My name is NA (Grove wife). How and where should I hang the bag? How many time should I rinse water. I have found that these sprout is attract bugs like crickets and roaches. It freaks me out. What do you think about using bleach with water to soak seeds? Do you have any recommendation about seed, and where to get the seeds? I'm sorry about asking so many questions. I really want to get it right this time.

The best are from Rainbow. Very healthy and active worms that will give your girls extra protein and great entertainment. Thanks Rainbow Farms.

I am so stoked that you will be serving sauerkraut (the way I make it) with the hot dogs. I'm constantly brewing something on my kitchen counter. FYI: I'm a big fan of KIm Chi. It really freaks my grandkids out. Looking forward to learning about Kombucha. I've tried it before, but never have I brewed it.
I must confess I am a Sandor Katz (or is it Kraut now) fan.

    February 20, 2013

    • Karen

Jocelyn, you sound just like me. Wait until you start brewing kombucha and they see that SCOBY floating on top - that'll REALLY gross them out!

To say "I'm so bummed to miss this gathering" doesn't quite catch just how much I'd LOVE to join you...please consider organizing a follow up, or maybe recording some of the teachings shared?!

I forgot to add that Dave is going to speak about how they are sprouting but also how they prepare lactobacillus to feed their flock. Here are links that you can learn more about lactobacillus, different types of feeding methods.

OK we are finalizing the list of speakers, we might have a sponsor for mealworms to first people who get there. I'll bring grains and sprouting bags and apple cider vinegar if people want to buy them just to cover costs of buying it. If you sprout or do fermenting or fodder and have a system that works please bring ideas to share and equipment. I have some cascade layer feed if people want some. I can sell it in batches if you just want to try it. I'm not sure my girls like it so far but it's been just a few hours of trying it.

I'm definitely interested in growing fodder, and would like to play around with it before meeting up so I can ask the experts!

Where do you guys actually source the seeds? I am having trouble finding barley/wheat that isn't hulled already...

    January 14, 2013

    • Roberta K.

the red wheat berries that have sprouted the best came from Winco. The feed stores carry different grains but they don't seem to sprout as well for me. I've also got some from modesto milling and azure farms.

Thanks, I appreciate the response. If anyone else is looking, I ended up special ordering it from Stephen's in Glendale. Good luck!

I'd been soaking and fermenting a lot of grains I had sitting around the house, the chickens are loving it. But what feed mixtures does anyone in the group recommend, and where to purchase these?

I'd love some instruction on how to brew Kombucha.

    November 22, 2012

    • Roberta K.

oo, marcella, i think i was sitting next to you. Uri gave a great presentation and the tasting bar of kombucha was the highlight. I'm definitely going to make chia kombucha and i think the chickens would love it. I wonder if kombucha would be better than apple cider vinegar.

      January 4, 2013

    • marcella

depends what you are using the apple cider vinegar for! kombucha is definitely more probiotic and alive, most supermarket apple cider vinegar is pasteurized.

Roberta presented a thorough, detailed program on mealworms and BSFL at the last Long Beach meeting and we want to keep the meetup topics varied for all levels of chicken-keepers. Feel free to start a thread to ask all your mealworm questions.
