City Chicks and the Soil Food Web Pierce College Class

Note: You need to register separately for this class at the link below. RSVPing here does not get you into the class.

Pierce College has a great extension class series about urban farming called You and Your Food. The classes are on different days and you can check out the other classes at the link below. The classes are free but you have to register early.

Raising Urban Chickens & Improving Your Soil

When it comes to sustainable living, chickens play a much bigger part than providing your family with the freshest eggs possible. They also help keep insects to a minimum, aerate and feed the soil, and they can be very entertaining! This class will discuss everything you need to know about raising chickens in Los Angeles. Then, we will talk about composting their waste to make a natural soil fertilizer that will have you swearing off the chemical fertilizers forever! We will cover composting and compost teas in the garden using your green waste, kitchen scraps and, of course, chicken poo.

Sheri Powell-Wolff is a sustainable landscape designer and soil fertility consultant specializing in compost tea applications for residential gardens. She has trained as a soil foodweb advisor with Dr. Elaine Ingham at Soil Foodweb Oregon and is a Master Soil Consultant trained through Earth Fortifications in Corvallis, OR. She lives and works in Los Angeles with her family and 7 chickens.

Register for the classes here.

I was confirmed in this class, but had to cancel... so, there is at least one cancellation someone can use! I went to the lecture last month on Urban Farming. I would say a fair number of people did not come, even though the website showed a full class and a wait-list. I say take a chance, and go, because if there are empty seats, maybe you can take one after class has started!

It will be held in the student union building.....there will be signs directing you from the parking lot.

I didn't bother to add to the wait list because it's so long. Perhaps you can add another one or two classes in the near future and notify this Meetup group. Thanks!

For those that just signed up, please note that you need to register separately for the class and it's closed but you can add yourself to the waitlist. Good luck. Can't wait to hear how it goes.

I called this week and sadly there's more than 100 people on the waitlist. Since I am 94, I will take the class another time.
