Getting Started In WordPress and Q&A

  • June 5, 2013 · 7:00 PM

This is our first LA WordPress 101! At the beginning of this meetup Andrew Behla (behladesign.com) will share some ways to set up a basic boilerplate WordPress website.

Secondly we are going to have a less structured breakout session where your WordPress questions can be answered. So bring your laptops and any questions you have about getting started in WordPress.

See you on June 5th!

Our location is being generously provided by Ciplex.

Cheers, Greg

I was over the character limit and had to break my message into two parts) A few plugins I mentioned:

    backup: http://wordpress.org/plugins/backupwordpress/

    seo: http://wordpress.org/plugins/wordpress-seo/ (free)
    local seo plugin: http://yoast.com/wordpress/local-seo/ (premium)
    analytics: http://wordpress.org/plugins/google-analytics-for-wordpress/ (free)

    contact forms
    gravity forms: http://www.gravityforms.com/ (premium)
    http://wordpress.org/plugins/formidable/ (free)

    sharing:

    I hope this helps!

Here's the video that I mentioned in my talk that Natalie gave at our WordPress Meetup on planning a site: https://www.wetransfer.com/downloads/abbe4ef31c0b99a1ba670779c8ed520220130610172043/5ddcc17892afe0d10ef2b99345f85a4820130610172043/82e6fa

Simply put, it is a GREAT talk and recommended to all!

A few other mentions from my talk:

    Permalinks code: /%category%/%postname%/

Settings, General, Reading: Make sure to check the option to "Discourage search engines from indexing this site" prior to launch and then remember to uncheck it and submit your site to google so they can index the site. https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/submit-url?continue=/addurl&pli=1

The video is almost 4gb! I'm working on a way to reduce it so I can post it. I'll update the thread if I can get it to work.

Although we had a glitch at the beginning, it was a great meeting. All the organizers were very helpful. I commend you all for donating your time just to be helpful to the community and cannot wait until our next meeting.

Great event full of interesting information for a complete beginner! Andrew Behla was perfect at going slow and answering our questions during the presentation and after.

My talk will focus on a self hosted (WordPress.org site), although you should be able to apply what I've worked on to WordPress.com.
