WordPress Basics

Hello WordPress Fans!

I'll be discussing "Themes 101" by popular request. If you missed my earlier Themes 101 presentation in May, or if you just want a refresher, try to attend this meeting.

In keeping with our Beginner's scope, this will be an introduction to WordPress Themes, including:

•  what to look for in a theme

• how to evaluate themes (generally

• best sources for finding themes (there are 10's of 1,000's of themes out there!)

• and more...

Themes are integral to customizing your (or your client's) WP site to get just the look you want... No programming required in this session...Hey, it's for Beginners! ;-)

If time permits, we'll follow up with our standard Q & A. If you have your own WordPress site -- no matter what stage of readiness -- bring your laptop and questions and I'll try to get you pointed in the right direction. Questions need not be related to themes, but this will be a great opportunity to ask related questions! :-)

As you know, I'm always looking for topics of interest to you! Is there something in your theme that's driving you nuts? Let me know! If you have a burning beginner question, it's likely others do too!

I spoke with one place that cost $75 for the first 4 hours then $25/hr. This is for up to 50 people. I did not get confirmation about WIFI which I know is a must have.

Calling another place on Monday... after Wordcamp.

    Hi Again Karen:
I actually got off my fanny and called Plummer Park Here' the info they gave me about the meeting rooms:
For the Art Room 2 (35-person) it would be $69 for 7-9pm, so I guess its not free after all, but I'm going to check further as I'm sure I heard that some groups get to use the meeting rooms for free. I'll keep you posted.

    Karen,

It's funny that I asked if I should update to the (not ready for prime time) version of WordPress and then today they came out with the production version (4.0)

    Hi Karen:
You might want to check Plummer Park, which is not far from Cafe Om but has lots of free parking and loads of meeting rooms. I believe that some are free (its a city park), but it may depend upon the room/facilities. I think there's a 14 day advance for reservations, but the schedule for some of the <35 person rooms didn't look full at all last I looked. E.g., "Art Room 2" has WiFi and can seat up to 35.
Here's a link you may want to check:https://apm.activecommunities.co...

Contact person at the park/reservations is Stephanie Martinez,[masked]-6530.

Thanks again for organizing the meetup!!

I enjoyed the meetup and learned a couple of things in which I was particularly interested. Karen did a great job of presenting despite the venue constraints.

If I had a magic Genie, I would wish for a different venue like a library meeting room or a room in a community or senior center where there would be no distracting noises and we could comfortably sit, hear, and have interaction. Oh, and where you could actually find a parking place.

    Nonetheless, I will be back.

Thanks, Don. I know we have constraints with the location, but it keeps the meetings FREE to attend. it would be great to have free parking, free WiFi, a "real" classroom... The reality is that in LA those types of venues cost $[masked] for 2 hours! We simply can't afford that, and no one would attend if we charged that range of $$$. If you have any venue ideas where we can get these things for free, I'd love to know about them! :-) And, I'm very glad you'll be back! Thanks so much!!!!

Hi Sawako, No worries! Sorry you can't attend, but it's understandable. It's really hard to handle all of our commitments! Hope to see you on the 3rd Saturday! :-)
