Volunteer for Youth Hack Jam

11:00am - 2:00pm (volunteers should show up by 10:30am)

This signup is for Volunteers only.

We'll use Eventbrite for attendees: http://lahackjam.eventbrite.com/

Inspired by Mozilla Foundation's Summer of Code Party that kicks off on June 23rd (https://wiki.mozilla.org/Summer_Campaign_2012). Note that this isn't just based off of Mozilla tools, it was just the inspiration.

The hope is that doing events like these will build the community, determine what type of events are popular, get eyeballs on these efforts, which will all lead to helping us secure a permanent space.

My goal is to get 100 kids and their parents learning how to code (Scratch/HTML/Javascript/PHP

We need:
* Meet and Greet Volunteers
* Volunteers to coach/help with web tech skills
* Documentarians: video, photo, etc.
* Reach out to potential sponsors to pay for food/drinks and giveaways
* Temporarily donate laptops for those that don't have one

Still not sure? Check out these inspirational photos! http://www.flickr.com/photos/mozilladrumbeat/galleries/72157629520245479/

If you sign up for this event I'll be pinging you to get together one of two times before the meetup for planning purposes.

    Hi Everyone-
    I wrote a blog post about the event. It includes a video by Kent Nichols and some pics by Kent and Art.

    The LA Hack Jam was great! Really well organized from start to finish: registration was smooth, sessions were full, lunch was delicious (and free), and the kids were having fun and learning. I hope we can run more of these. Bravo!

    I know I organized the event, but I'm giving it 5 stars because I was more than impressed by the volunteers that contributed their time, patience, insight and mad skills. Thank you thank you thank you. And the kids and parents thank you. <3

    Any effort to bring science to kids is an effort I want to be a part of. LA Youth Hack Jam was awesome!

    Hi Wendy - The parental consent form is here. I used the same one that my lawyer helped me draft for the mentoring program that I run.

    Hi Tara, Is there a parent consent form for Saturday we can access on line? I'm a volunteer, but my 15 year-old and his friend are signed up as attendees. I'm concerned about his friend since I'll be bringing both kids.

    @Michelle - You will be assigned to a group that will be working on a project together. Some kids already have a project they are working on so for them they might have some questions here and there. More info coming soon.

    For those volunteering to teach, how should we tailor our lesson plans for this? Will people be walking around and informally stopping to chat with us about our topic, or are there scheduled time slots for "classes" to be taking place?

    Re: Interests. If you look in the volunteer spreadsheet under Teams and Free Learning, as participants respond to the survey I'm adding their name+adult or kid + primary interest.

    Dear Michael,

    I sent out a survey to the people who registered but they haven't all responded.

    We have 100 people registered. Families have registered with 1 or 2 kids. We have kids 6-15 registered so far. So I'm going to guess we have half adults and half kids. 32 people here have said the are volunteering but I know not all will show so assume around 20-25 volunteers. Once I have more info on attendees I'll send an update with the agenda, etc.

    Do we know anything about the attendee/mentor ratio, age demographic, or interests relative to the eventbrite response? I'm trying to wrap my head around a shiny/memorable/inspiring/take-home object that is makable in a few hours. Knowing some of these things would help with prepared materials.

    Also, I feel grossly out of touch with the technological proficiency of youth. I'd rather be vocabulary appropriate than lose my audience. Someone will say I sounded like this: http://imdb.to/MbZlVO

    If you haven't added your name to the Volunteer spreadsheet, please do so. We need to organize teams by skillset. https://docs.google.com/spreadsh...

    Thanks!

    Hi Paul - I have asked for everyone to bring their own device and to let me know if they don't have one. I'm going to send out a survey soon to the registrants to ask if they have PC or Mac or nothing at all.

    Hey Tara - do you know what equipment will be available for us to work with? Is it BYOD (Bring your own device)?
