We found a great little restaurant yesterday on Sawtelle Blvd. in West LA, with an amazing happy hour - 50% off almost all bottles of sake (including one of my favorites, Dassai), pitchers of beer, and jidori chicken robata skewers from 5:30pm - 7:30pm. I've yet to find a better deal on sake in this city...and during this recession, it's hard to pass up a great deal! The robata skewers were delicious, and are almost as good as Nanbankan (for those that know me, Nanbankan is my favorite restaurant, so that is saying a LOT!) So, for our first meet-up event, let's break the ice and get to know each other over a few glasses of sake at Robata-ya. Check out the LA times review for more info on the restaurant, which opened last fall. http://www.latimes.co...
The sake we plan on drinking are:
1) Dassai 50 - Junmai Ginjo, Yamaguchi Prefecture, SMV +3, Acidity 1.4, Light & Smooth
2) Kubota Hekijyo - Junmai Daiginjo, Niigata Prefecture, SMV +3, Acidity 1.5, Tight & Clean
3) Shirakabe gura - TYPE: Tokubetsu Junmai, Kyoto Prefecture, SMV +2, Acidity 1.6, Clean & Ricey
The cost will be about $20 - $25 per person for sake (which gets you about 540ml of sake - 3/4 of a bottle), and $10 - $15 for food - but you have to be there before happy hour ends at 7:30! Hope to see you there!
I'm putting together a PDF with information on the sakes we tried--will have it out to everyone in a couple of days!
Thank you, everyone for coming to our first "official" meetup event. I can't believe we managed to drink 5 bottles - definitely a good start for our group! Even better was the great conversation - I am looking forward to seeing you all again soon.
