MINDFULNESS FOR INTERMEDIATE & ADVANCED PRACTITIONERS: ANAPANA BREATH MEDITATION

MINDFULNESS FOR INTERMEDIATE & ADVANCED PRACTITIONERS:

ANAPANA BREATH MEDITATION

--DEEPENING AND STRENGTHENING OUR PRACTICE--

Sunday, April 28, 2013

From 5:00 to 7:00 P.M.

Mindfulness Meditation has two aspects: stopping (shamatha) and observation or looking deeply (vipashyana).  Stopping is concentration while looking deeply is insight.

Anapana, as an object of concentration for the mind, will help us to observe our breath and look deeply into it in order to see it in all its depth. In this way, stopping and observing become one.  The more deeply we observe, the more still our mind becomes.  The quieter our mind becomes, the greater our mental concentration becomes.  The greater our capacity for mental concentration becomes, the greater are the benefits from Mindfulness Practice and the deeper our Transformation and Healing.

In order to serve you better as an experienced Mindfulness Practitioner, this class focuses on PRACTICAL ASPECTS of breathing and concentration, rather than on Philosophical or Scholarly aspects. Our aim is for participants to learn practical mindfulness techniques that can be applied easily and immediately to our daily lives, decrease suffering, cultivate joy, and increase ease and peace of mind.  The class’ textbook, however, covers both the practical as well as the philosophical and scholarly aspects of the practice and private consultations with the instructor are available for those who would like to schedule them and go more in depth after taking the class.

In addition, special opportunities for longer periods of sitting and mindfulness practice in group format will be available for those intermediate to advanced practitioners who successfully complete this class.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN:

  • Practical Mindfulness Techniques that can be applied easily and immediately in your daily life.
  • Time proven Breathing and Concentration Techniques transmitted from teacher to student throughout 2600 years of Buddhist history from ancient teachings in the Anapanasati (Full awareness of Breathing) and Satipatthana (Four Establishments of Mindfulness) Suttas (Teachings of the Buddha).
  • Anapana, a breath meditation technique designed to help you increase stillness and decrease mental anxiety and agitation, and gain wisdom and understanding.
  • Practical Meditation Techniques to increase your capacity for deep observation and clear seeing so you can look deeply into the reality of things and phenomena (dharmas), decrease misery and suffering, increase joy and peace of mind, and live with ease.
  • This class will also include an opportunity for Questions and Answers directly related to your Mindfulness Practice, in a supportive and safe environment.

IN ADDITION YOU WILL RECEIVE:

  • All training and support materials:

This class was very well-presented. Dr. Martha Martinez tailored the class to the individual participants experience and questions.
Dr. Martinez has great knowledge and experience in the Tradition of Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh. We greatly look forward to future classes taught by her. The small group instruction is invaluable to those seeking to develop or strengthen a mindfulness practice.
