The Broward Lotus Sangha
and
Tu Viện Hương Hải

Are pleased to invite you to a
Mini-Retreat
Led by
Vietnamese Zen Master Thich Tinh Tu
Sunday, April 12th, 2009
in Davie, FL
From 6:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M.

The Mini-Retreat will be conducted in English and Vietnamese in Plum Village style. Throughout the day, we will enjoy periods of chanting, sitting, and walking meditation, as well as Thây Nhat Hanh’s Mindful Movements and stick exercises, deep relaxation, and tea meditation. We will also enjoy Dharma Teachings from Zen Master Thich Tinh Tu and a Dharma Sharing from the four-fold Sangha. This Mini-Retreat will provide a wonderful opportunity for those who want to deepen their mindfulness practice with time for reflection and silence.

In the Buddhist spirit of generosity and inclusiveness, this event is offered free of charge and open to all practitioners. However, your generosity in providing a donation or Dana for the dharma teacher and the monastic and lay Sanghas is gratefully accepted and encouraged as, without it, we would be unable to continue providing these services to the community. Your kind donation helps support the activities of the Sangha (e.g., defray the costs associated with offering retreat space, dharma teachings and activities, beverages and meals) and is greatly appreciated.

Please register early as space is limited and we need to know how many meals to provide. Directions and specific instructions for participation will be sent to those who register.

I think Sister Chan Kong's voice is lovely, but having heard the recording several times before, I chose to do my own 'deep relaxation' outside in the shade. It's always worth considering looking into one's aversions, but fear not - nobody will ever hit you with a stick at our meetings or events for non-compliance!

This Plum Village-style Mini-Retreat was great. Once again the Vietnamese and Western members of the lay and monastic Sanghas had an opportunity to practice joyfully together. After enjoying sitting, walking meditation and chanting, we formally recited Thây Nhat Hanh’s Five Mindfulness Trainings. Brothers Kuang Kin and Chan Houng Hue led us through energizing Mindful Movements and stick exercises right before breakfast. We then practiced walking and sitting meditation, followed by Dharma Talks for children and adults, and Q&A. After some lazy time in the Quan Te Am Garden, we enjoyed a formal meal in the Meditation Hall, followed by deep relaxation and joyful singing. Sitting meditation, Dharma Discussion, Love Meditations (Metta Practice), and songs of practice followed. At 5:30 we had the formal Mini-Retreat closing circle and sharing, and then enjoyed dinner, laughter, and fellowship together as a group of friends.

It was good but I did have some reactions. I left at 3pm due to the fact that during the 'deep relaxation', the very loud singing, never stopped. I would have been very grateful for silence and probably would have stayed. I found the singing a bit silly. The atmosphere was delightful. The Mindfull movmement with the sticks was intense and great. Wished there was more sitting.
