It's a "swale" thing!.........Why and how

Water catchment and management are integral parts of Permaculture, and swales are an important tool to in this process. In this workshop, Vaughn Zeller, and I will discuss contours, swales and swale building. The group will then establish some contour lines in the park using three methods. We will learn how to use the A-frame level, water level, and builder's level to generate these contour lines. No digging involved.  We will not actually make swales, only experience the layout. This promises to be a fun and informative Meetup. This is something that kids can participate in and you are encouraged to bring them. There is a playground within sight of where we will be working. The Meetup will be at the edge of the large teepee shaped structure across from Hogan's Fountain. Don't worry if you are late to this Meetup as we will do the discussion first, then turn to the practical.

Sherry, tell us a little about your property and maybe some of us can make some suggestions. What is the soil like? What is the slope (flat, gentle or steep)? What are the current site conditions-existing vegetation, structures, ponds, sun exposure, etc.?

Am interested in learning as I want to put Swales and hugelkulture beds on our farm. Have been organic for years but never can learn enough. Have 3 acres I want to make into a food forest.

So I don't want to exploit any labor, but was planning on digging some small swales on the 15th if anyone wants a hands on experience. If it turns out that there's interest we'll provide lunch and beverages. Someone had mentioned that it would be a good idea, so if you're interested let me know.

Cool practical tools introduced to us to use and compare- some we can make- to find the same level ground out over an area to build a swale for terracing, watering on a hillside. Thanks for sharing the ingenuity that isn't yet common knowledge!

I have access to a basic laser level setup. If you think it would be helpful, I can bring it along.
