Establish a Community Garden in Smoketown

I was approached by Quinn Drake, head of the Smoketown Renaissance Group, who has a vision of building a community garden in a 1/4 acre lot he owns in Smoketown (one mile south of downtown, bounded by E. Broadway, Floyd, E. Kentucky and Beargrass Creek (Logan)), across from a building he also owns and plans to turn into a community center of sorts.

Ray and I visited with Quinn last week, and we'd like to gather some willing volunteers and anyone knowledgeable about building a community garden from scratch (the property is now simply a yard with grass).

This Meetup event would be to meet with Quinn and others from the Smoketown Renaissance Group and 1) determine viability of a community garden on this site (Ray and I think it is viable from first glance), 2) formulate next steps to either make it viable or move it forward (soil testing, sources for supplies, determine raised bed versus in-ground, local government or university involvement, etc.) and 3) assign tasks and 4) determine next Meetup date.

There is already local government support behind Smoketown. Let's keep the momentum going.

NOTE: THIS MEETUP IS NOT TO START DIGGING OR PLANTING; it is to determine viability, brainstorm and plan. Your input into garden design and/or your efforts as a mentor to those who will build the garden is what we're looking for at this point. Of course, hands on during the digging will be greatly appreciated as well. VOLUNTEERS AND EXPERTS WELCOME!!!

Nate: Please try to join us tonight, we'd welcome your feedback. We were informed about the Lampton Garden by Cindy A on Friday and are trying to invite the Lampton Garden manager, Jim Busch, to attend the meeting also.

Very cool. Consider a community orchard! Just FYI, for years we've had untended plots just blocks away from this site in the St. Peter Claver Community Garden (off Lampton St. btwn Hancock & Jackson)...and there is some room to grow there. Sometimes more land isn't what's most needed to get more people gardening.

The Permaculture Guild plot from the 5-12 meeting will be on display at the East Main Street Community Garden after this Tuesday's meeting. Please come spend a few minutes after the meeting, these two sites are very close in proximity :)
