MAY 2013: update-so far, growth is non-existent, but the grafts are not dead. See following pix and commentary. All of the rootstock have leafed out below the grafts. I think I will knock off all these shoots excepting one. Leaving only one "nurse branch" will leave more juice to go up to the graft and will hopefully give it a better shot at making it. The nurse will continue to grow and feed the roots so they will survive winter. Also, if the graft succumbs, the nurse branch will be thick enough next year to graft onto. If the graft finally leafs out, I will trim off the nurse branch to direct growth only to the graft, letting the graft feed the roots.
