(Cancelled!) Stone Fort Trip

My return from injury trip to good ole Stone Fort outside of Chattanooga and/or Rocktown in GA. I'll leave Friday after work and come back Monday mid-day. We'll discuss specifics once time gets closer and decide camping/carpooling as people sign up. We could stay at the crash pad (nice hostel, costs $27 per night) or camp at a couple of places others have stayed. I'll climb sat, sun, mon, and come back Mon evening. The bouldering is unbelievable and on a golf course at LRC and is slightly more remote for Rocktown. Cost for day pass is $5 or $0.

I also may do a one day excursion to t-wall for you peeps wanting to get on some quality trad routes.

Hope you can join. If you can go, let us know whether you can drive and how many you can fit with pads and such. I can drive and fit two more people probably. We will decide final location depending on what majority wants. Please put your preference in RSVP.

Some guidelines to remember on outside bouldering trips:

- Please have your own shoes, chalk, and crash pad (unless we have plenty).

- Please be an attentive spotter  and know how to spot for bouldering.

- Before climbing make sure landing is appropriately protected and spotters are ready.

- Always practice leave no trace, minimize chalk use, avoid damage to vegetation, minimize noise, etc.

- You must have climbed with the group inside before attending an outdoors meetup.

After some thought, I'm cancelling the Meetup group trip to Chattanooga and campsite reservations due to predicted weather on Fri, and Saturday still being a question mark. I would feel horribly if we all plan to go only to be stuck in the rain. I am still going to Chatty and will be staying/visiting with friends/family. If anyone decides to brave the elements, you'll need to make arrangements for where to stay, etc. Feel free to shoot me a text if you go, and we'll try to connect. Also, if you're wanting to get outside but not drive to Chatty, the Spring Reunion at Miquel's is still occurring at RRG. Sorry this trip has turned into a bust, but we'll plan many more throughout the year!

Always a role of the dice when Mother Nature is your co-planner! But weather for Reunion is looking good. It's a great event for a great cause! Too, after this weekend, it'll be easier for me to make it down to Chatty or HP40.

  • Angela C.

Ok folks - as of right now, my weather app is telling me Chattanooga is expecting 60% chance thunderstorms on Friday and 40% chance on Saturday. We might need to make a judgment call by tomorrow re: if we go or not. Thoughts???

    March 24

    • Amy 4.

weather.com has a better forecast (60% Friday, 10% Saturday) but other sites have a higher percentage for Saturday. I'm cool with making a decision tomorrow or even Wednesday if we want to wait a little longer.

It looks like all major Tennessee and Kentucky climbing areas have basically the same forecast. If there are already reservations at racoon mtn, I'd say we have as good of a chance lucking out on weather down there as any other climbing area...though I would love to get on those roofs at obed ;)

Mandy, we'll miss you!!! : ( To attempt picking up where Mandy left off, our group has 1 primitive campsite reserved at Raccoon Mtn Campground (will be changed from Mandy's name to mine) from Th night to Sat night. To my knowledge, Curtis and I are riding down together Th afternoon, and I think John was going to hop in with us. I think Amy is going to arrive Th night also. This campground will cover the 4 of us, and others who are going will need to contact Raccoon Mtn to reserve a campsite: website: http://www.raccoonmountain.com/...; phone: Phone:[masked] / (800) 823-2267. I have a few friends down there, and I'll likely plan to have dinner with them Fri or Sat night. Everyone's welcome to join us. Beyond that, we can certainly eat simply for breakfast/lunch, and eat dinner out? Please reply with thoughts re: food. Bring all climbing gear you have for the kind of climbing you wanna do; there's bouldering, sport, and trad in this area. Oh - bring games, too!

    Yay!

I'm going to be extremely busy later in the week so if anyone wants my mad pad I better get it to you by tomorrow.

      March 24

    • Thomas G.

Bertha will be making her debut this weekend. She fits 3-4 passengers comfortably besides me. My dog will be in the van. I will be bringing pad/trad rack/sport rack.

      March 24

  • Jocelyn

If Mandy isn't going, how many crash pads do we have?

    March 23

  • Josh R.

If I can get someone to watch my dog, can I ride with the people going down Thursday?

    March 22

  • Mandy

Sorry y'all - not gonna make it to this one. Angela is gonna take over organizing.

    March 21

  • Angela C.

Looks like Thomas is going too (yay!)!

    March 20

  • Angela C.

Just spoke with Curtis, and he's gonna ride down with me Thursday afternoon and return Sun night. At this point, we may stay at my friends' house outside Rocktown Th night. After that, I have some ideas:
    1) Days Inn in La Fayette, GA has non-smoking rooms for $55.20/night (according to priceline.com, and if you don't mind a single star rating!).
    2) Raccoon Mountain Campground, where we stayed last May, has open campsites available (with a fabulous bathhouse!), and primitive is $18.31/site/night for up to 4 people on the site. RMCampground is approx 30 mins from Stonefort and 45 mins from Rocktown. I'm leaning toward Raccoon Mtn Campground and want to reserve something by the middle or end of this wk. Yes, I'm a planner - it's a strength and a curse! : )

    Thoughts?

    March 8

    • Dan

Raccoon Mountain sounds ideal. No hotel for me! But keep in mind I'm still not 100% sure I'm going. If I am, I can head down Thursday evening too.

      March 9

    • Amy 4.

Racoon Mountain is fine with me.

      March 9

  • Mandy

So Angela - no room for me and my 2 crash pads? I'm also willing to take my car if others help drive. I'm open to either lodging option.

    March 8

  • Mandy

I vote we go to Rocktown & camp (backcountry and no bathrooms / showers). If people want more comfort, there are affordable hotels. If people want, we can do one day at stone fort?

What days are most peeps going? Does everyone want to do fri-sun?

For Rocktown, all vehicles going will need a pass for the area. I'll post info this weekend. I guess we should start discussing carpool. I can be flexible in my schedule if it means riding down with someone...I have 2 crash pads.

    March 6

    • Angela C.

Re: where we go - all of the above for me. I'm indifferent; I like it all!

      March 7

    • Dan

      Ooo....turkey season. Good point.

      March 7

  • Mandy

If peeps want to do fri-sun then let's do that. I could do hotel as well. I'm also open to driving to Chattanooga for stone fort on Sun on our way back or spending fri there. I'm open as I probably won't be in shape for too much climbing anyways.

    March 7

  • Angela C.

Thinking ahead, I'm gonna drive down to Chatty Thursday after work, and I'll be returning home Sunday night. Anyone who is interested in this same schedule, let's car pool. Also, what do we wish to do for staying the nights? Camp, hostel, cheap hotel, back of car? ; ) I'm game for all of the above (except sleeping in my car!). It seems now's a good time to begin formalizing those specific plans so we're not outta luck...

Please reply with thoughts, and I'll begin to look around if no one has yet....

    March 5

    • Dan

As for where to stay, I've not yet heard definitively whether destination is Rocktown or Stone Fort.

      March 5

  • Mandy

Hey y'all! Just saw red river reunion is this weekend. Would people want to move this a weekend up? Just didn't know if peeps wanna go to the reunion or not. I'm open either way.

    March 2

    • Angela C.

I think keeping the trip as planned is indeed the easiest plan, but very thoughtful idea! : )

      March 5

  • Dan

@Mandy, might be easiest to keep as is. My goal still is to make the trip.

    March 5

  • Jocelyn

It may be difficult for me to switch trip days. I work Sunday-Thursday now and I already have the current Sunday off for the trip. It's difficult to switch at this point. If you change the date I may not be able to go.

    March 5

  • Dan

@Angela: To make sure we have an accurate count, I changed my RSVP to "+1" to account for Curtis. Let me know if plans change. Thanks :-)
