Special Olympics:

Every year, usually in May, many of the more than 36,000 Special Olympics athletes in the State of Texas come to the University of Texas at Arlington to compete in their Summer Games, in quite a variety of events.  Last year, more than 3,000 athletes competed!

Please note there is no fee to volunteer at this event there shows a ten dollar fee on this event, which would be a donation to help grow our group and to help get our group non-profit status that will make our group stronger so we can help more people but that will cost several thousand dollars. Only make a donation if you can. Please come volunteer. We need you!

In order to enable these brave and talented athletes to do their best and have fun while doing it, the folks at Special Olympics Texas (SOTX) will need the help of many caring volunteers.  Would you like to be among these volunteers?

This year's Summer Games will be held from Thursday, May 24, through Sunday, May 27, at UTA's Maverick Stadium.  Let's get a group volunteers together to volunteer there on Saturday, May 26, their busiest day.

In order to be permitted to volunteer at SOTX events, including the Summer Games, you MUST first register at the SOTX web site, at, and sign up for the sport(s), date(s), and shift(s) you've chosen.  You'll then receive an e-mailed confirmation.  BUT the sign-up page for this year's Summer Games has NOT yet been posted, and it won't be until about a month from now, in mid-April.

So this is just a preliminary announcement, a heads-up so that you can keep open the morning and afternoon of Saturday, May 26.  If you can't make it on that day, please consider volunteering on that Thursday, Friday, or Sunday instead.  But let's target that Saturday for our RAK group event.

Please do sign up on this event page, at the right, so we can get some idea of how many volunteers (and guests) we'll have.  I'll share new information as it becomes available, including the posting of the official SOTX sign-up page, so please check back from time to time, either here or on the SOTX web site.

And according to SOTX's Director of Volunteer Services, "the minimum age of volunteers is 8 if they are accompanied by an adult, though younger children and their parents are always welcome to come and be Fans in the Stands."

I'll close by sharing with you the words of the Special Olympics Volunteer Oath:

"I promise to give the time in my life so that Special Olympics athletes can have the time of their lives.

I promise to support Special Olympics not just as an expression of charity, but as a form of respect for my fellow human beings.

I promise to spread the word of volunteerism because, in giving, I receive so much more in return."

We also are doing some fundraising so keep your eye out for an email to help us with raise funds for our awesome events or if you can make a donation to the group today go under membership dues on our home page and help spread love and be the change you want to see in this world.

Thank you and have an awesome day!

Hello, I just moved to the Arlington area. I will be opening an office here it's will be called River Kids, therapist and I will be working with children that need extra help with ST, OT and PT. I like getting involved with the area and children. I do like volunteering as well. Thank you and God Bless

I have read the feed back and will try to thing differently in the future. The large events, there are so many positions, and volunteers, its hard to connect with everyone. I am looking into getting hats, or shirts so we spot each other better at events. Sorry for this event everyone. I was emailed by the organizer to try and get volunteers there but I was unable to make the event. I wish they had there volunteer tent more organized. I'm happy for everyone who enjoyed the event.

I agree Bill. You should bring a friend. I spend 98% of my time alone, so not being able to meet up with the group really doesn't stop or hinder me having a good time. I enjoyed myself at the event even thought I didn't see a singel soul from the meetup group.

I agree with Jen assessment about the large volunteer events. Excedpt for the events at the Circle R ranch, I rarely run into anyone I know. I still have fun hanging out with people I usually would not meet at work or through my normal social circles. If someone is introverted, I suggest that they bring a friend at the next large volunteeer event

I agree we should have tshirts or hats made for this group and better communication about where and when to meet...i like to have a meetup about this is anyone game? If so lets meet and greet sometime in june, im open to suggestions.

As Usual there was no one to meetup with. I got there around 11:10 am so I was a little late. I've been hearing that even people that were there at 11 didn't meetup with anyone. I just check in at the vounteer tent and went to work with the kids.
I agree that the next meetup we have we should have a shirt or a specific color to be able to identify our group. Other than that I had a wonderful time. I enjoyed watching the Olympic games, giving and getting hugs. Thanks for coordinating this meetup. Let's do it again.

FYI, I was not the event host (not sure why it says that I was). I just wanted to throw this out there - every event I have ever been to, I have never met someone from the group. At first I thought it was weird because this is "meetup," but then it became the "norm" for me, I just thought this was a chance to volunteer places. I'd love to meet people as well, but in the last year or so, still have not met anyone. It may be a good idea to have something that everyone has/wears to point us out.

I got there at 11 am and was told to come back after lunch at 12:30 which I did. I found it very rewarding and had alot of fun. I will prob. try to do it again next year.

I was very disappointed. I showed up at around 11 but there was only one woman at the volunteer tent. She knew nothing about this group and said I would need to come back after lunch. This event was not very well organized.

I had a blast at the track & filed awards cermony getting the kids on & off the awards platforms. Enjoyed watching the proud parents, foster parents & volunteer coaches taking photos.

It was great to see the level of competition and sportsmanship the athletes showed. I have been a trainer for nearly 10 years and think that all my clients could benefit from watching what took place. For me the experience was a great teacher and motivator. Inspiring.
