Here are some of the paintings we'll be looking at at the National Gallery on 7th July

see you on the 7th ( or repeat on 14th July)

Hello All

It was wonderful to meet each and every one of you today and I think we have the making of a great group. Just look at those photos - to think that just two hours earlier we were all complete strangers to one another.

I hope you enjoyed this first taste of what great paintings can bring into your lives. Thank you to those of you who have already sent feedback and suggestions, please feel free to add yours.

After this introductory first meeting I will need to bring up the attendance fee to £10 for the two hours - please please let me know if this is a problem as I wouldn't want to lose any of you! In real terms its only £1 more as we now found out that you make a saving of around £1 for your tea and cake through my 25% staff discount. But it will help to pay for extras such as name tags, preparation time etc.

For our next meeting on Saturday 7th July, we are going to look at Portraits.

In due course I will send you some images so you can familiarise yourselves with the range of portraits at the National Gallery.

All best and keep in touch!

Take it we meet at the same spot - by the Sainsbury wing reception?

Wow, Mark, that's quick bit of research. Very interesting, thank you!

I enjoyed the introduction to symbols and consulted James Hall's dictionary of subjects and symbols about St Catherine, attribute the wheel "usually but not always with spikes, and either whole or broken". A divine thunderbolt destroyed the emperor's four spiked wheels before they could harm her and she was then beheaded. She was a patron of education and learning generally.

Dear Jason - well, you'll be missed and Elisabeth Vigee Lebrun was certainly on my list of portraits to look at. Thank you very much for alerting others to this event.
