Road Bike:Andermatt-Furka-Nufenen-Gotthard

Been thinking of such a ride for a while and nothing better than share it with other people :)
This is a challenging ride with 3260 mt elevation gain and a total of 104 km so better be in a good shape even if we are planning to stop several time, rest a little and enjoy the panorama. The event is planned for August so there is plenty of time to train for it :)

I am coming from Zürich. Does anyone have space for me to join them? Alternatively, I could also take another person but we would have to remove front and rear wheels as I only have a sedan.

Weather should be good on Saturday but it might be chilli on top of the mountains so bring a wind jacket. We will stop several times to rest and enjoy but bring energy bars or gels in any case. I will leave from Stans with other 2 guys in 1 car. For the people that are coming send me a message so we can exchange phone numbers etc.

Is it doable with normal usual MTB?

    August 7, 2013

    • marco

Ciao Natalia it will be definitely way longer.

      August 8, 2013

    • Philip

Hi Natalia, the main problem is the speed difference. It would be hard to keep up with road bikes using a MTB.

Hmm don't know if I could make that. Took a look at the incline and for the moment I'm not prepared for that steepness on my gears.

Hi guys the event might move to Saturday because of the weather. Please just sign if you are 100% sure of coming.

    August 6, 2013

    • Philip

Hi Marco, if you do move to Saturday I will be in but I need to decide by Wednesday evening. If I don't ride Saturday, I will do the Züri Metzgete but I won't do both. Last Saturday, I rode from Göschenen over the Furka, Grimsel and Susten, doing a loop, so I know my level.

Hi Philip, moved to saturday, weather looks much better

  • marco

Hi guys I've changed the loop because the downhill from the Furka headed to Andermatt was too dengerous so on the other way is much easier

  • Johannes

    Hi guys,
I'm still in, but realized after a few trainings how bad my condition is at the moment.
So will go on the start with you on Friday most likely will do only 1-2 passes.
Very much looking forward seeing you all!

    August 4, 2013

    • marco

Johannes if you do the first pass you have to continue to the second one (there is no train or public transportation in the between) unless you go back once you are on top of the first pass.

Hi all, sorry I have to cancel for the tour - I'll have to travel to LA exactly during this period. Pity, I'd have loved to do this fascinating tour with you. Wishing you fantastic weather (blue skies, but not too hot) and can't wait to hear from you how it went. Best, Christian

Hi there. you can call me a wimp but I have to skip the event again. see you hopefully soon on another event. sorry

    August 4, 2013

  • Philip

Totally understand the reason for doing it on a weekday. Recently rode the Susten on a weekday (Swiss Olympic Gigathlon) and it was so much more enjoyable. Unfortunately, with so many people away during July and August, it's hard to get a day off for those still around. I know these passes like the back of my hand but never get tired of doing them. Check out www.alpenbrevet.ch (German and French) for other/similar variations. Anyone up for a similar ride on a weekend, please feel free to get in touch.

Thank you Thomas and Marco, this really makes sense. Didn't consider that fact.

  • Thomas

to ride before the motorbikers cruise over the roads makes a lot of sense. I can tell!

    May 15, 2013

  • marco

Hi Johannes, it's mainly to avoid cars and bikes, it can be quite crowded in the weekend

    May 15, 2013

  • Johannes

Just curious: why do the ride on a Friday, not the Saturday? Would have to take an extra day of vacation for it.

    May 14, 2013

  • Thomas

hi folks. I see your point of doing an extra pass and I like the idea of taking the Grimsel as an option. I can offer one or two persons with their velos to jump on my car from Lucerne

Hi guys here is the link for the route we are planning on: http://www.bikemap.net/route/993870#lat=[masked]&lng=[masked]&zoom=12&maptype=ts_terrain
The plan is to start from Andermatt. We just have to hope for a good weather :)

Gletsch-Grimsel-Gletsch is only a short detour (less than 10km, 400 m altitude) on the climb from Goms to Furka, so I guess the plan is to 'collect' a 4th col while we are in the region. You can have an extended break in Gletsch if you prefer.

    hi marco
I am not sure what the exact plan is but to come back to Andermatt the Grimsel is not on the way...
    the Gotthard-nufenen-Furka I would join.

A fantastic ride - amazing views that make you forget the aching muscles from all the climbing. Pure adrenalin rush guaranteed going down from the cols. I'm in!
