Here's a friendly place for Chesapeake region sailboat skippers to find crew.  Skippers post sailing events and select crew volunteers from RSVPs.  Everyone can also find social events ashore to first establish rapport or advance sailing background knowledge.

To join this group a recognizable face photo without sunglasses is required.  The group profile photo is accessed via the "My profile" menu "View profile" selection under the meetup group banner at the top of the page.

Skippers use the "Suggested" tab to post their own boats' sailing events to "call for crew", crew can volunteer to sail for each event, then skippers select their crew from the group member RSVPs.  The rest of the details for each cruise event are worked out between the skipper and crew.  Each skipper's "Suggested" sailing event is quickly reviewed by an organizer before being announced to the whole group.

This is a year-round sailing meetup for boat owners and non-boat owners alike to come together for day sails, weekend trips, longer voyages, and social events where we can make plans, share stories, and increase their sailing experience and knowledge, and sailing social circle.  Social events include formal and informal educational opportunities.

This meetup's main purpose is to get people involved in sailing either to help boat owners find crew or as groups sharing the cost for chartered boats or for group sailing events.  Whether finding crew, looking to crew, sharing costs for a charter, or organizing race crew events, Chesapeake Sailors Meetup provides an easy way for both skippers and crew to connect.

You don't have to know how to sail to be a part of this group, only a willingness to learn. People with boats often welcome guests aboard to help pull ropes, turn cranks, or pass out refreshments. That is what "crewing" is all about.

Now about that knowing-how-to-sail part, here's a few more thoughts...

There is a saying: "There is no substitute for a formal education".
There is another saying: "There is no substitute for experience".
Both sayings are true !

Skippers don't *need* inexperienced, untrained crew.  However some of us are *willing to help* passengers become useful crew.

So the point is that while skippers will take some inexperienced and untrained crew, they first seek people with experience so that they have the best help to sail safely underway.  For people without much sailing experience it is recommend is that they sign up for a beginners' 2 day (weekend) or 3 day course at one of the many competent local sailing schools where many of us started long ago or perhaps on a tropical vacation.  The courses are both challenging and fun.  Meantime do some studying, even online so that you already know some of the names of the parts of a sailboat, particularly the rigging lines that control the sails.  That way you can begin to make yourself more useful aboard.

Otherwise you can start from scratch and just learn aboard, but that is very slow process with inconsistent opportunities and results.

Another aspect of connecting with skippers is to meet them at social events.  Crew can look at the background of RSVPs for social events so you know who the skippers are and create a good rapport with them at the meetups.

Sailing the Chesapeake Bay is challenging, rewarding, and fun, so let’s go have some fun !
