Measurements like you describe are called morphometric measurements. They would be developed for a particular species. Developing these would require multiple measurements on different individual organisms of the same species at different life stages AND in the condition that a comparision measuremant would be taken. So, in the case of finding a snake vertebrae...someone else would have had to have measured snake vertebrate from multipile dead snakes of that species. [next message]
