Guest  speaker(s) TBA

Come learn new tips and tricks for developing award winning Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 apps

breakfast, lunch and afternoon coffee will be provided

This will be a hands-on hackathon so be sure to bring your laptop preconfigured with Visual Studio 2013, including the Windows Phone SDK.

This hackathon is themed around the challenges on, a free rewards program site run by Nokia for Windows Phone developers. On you earn experience points (XP) by completing challenges and then can redeem these XP for prizes, everything from Windows Phone swag to Amazon gift cards to Nokia Lumia phones.

At the hackathon, you will be provided with a handful of app challenges to choose from, hand picked by the event organizers because they should be able to be completed or mostly completed in a day. Sample code and other resources will be provided, along with expert help from mentors. These challenges will include but are not limited to apps that use NFC communications, Nokia Maps, and the phone's camera.

So what can you walk away with by participating in this event?

we will have DVLUP giveaways for registered geeks and special prizes for apps published within 2 weeks

What do I need to bring?

Bring your own Windows 8 laptop if possible. There will be a very limited number of systems available if you do not have this, but not nearly enough for everyone. Please let us know in advance if you need access to a PC.

Most but not all DVLUP challenges require the app be developed for Windows Phone 8. Unfortunately the Windows Phone 8 development tools only run on Windows 8 (64 bit) systems. You will need the Windows Phone 8 SDK installed, and it is highly recommended you do this ahead of time, download here

If you don't have a Windows 8 machine, all is not lost. If you have Windows 7 or Vista you can develop apps for Windows Phone 7. You will be limited in the challenges you can develop for, but will still qualify for all of the promotions. Please install the Windows Phone 7.1 SDK ahead of time, link:

Had a great time at the hackathon, lots of outstanding resources, and great support from TEKSystems and FSCJ. Got my app published (, too! Very elementary, but I'm working on some updates to polish it up and add features. Thanks!

Love these hackathons, they really help me to Get Something Done®. It's great to work and socialize with other local developers, and get some free swag and contest stuff. Thanks to Marc and Jake for putting this on, and to Gail - our terrific host professor - for hosting us. Also, Angie's Subs is still da bomb-diggity!
