Electric Sociability Run

  • May 27, 2013 · 11:00 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

Drivers and fans of plug-in electric vehicles will gather in Washington, DC to celebrate the 99th anniversary of the Electric Sociability Run of 1914. The event will be held on Memorial Day, May 27, 2013.

We will commemorate the 1914 Electric Sociability Run by driving our electric vehicles to the same destination in Rock Creek Park as the original gathering nearly a century ago. As with that event, there will be a picnic, various contests and prizes will be awarded.

Electric Vehicle Sociability Run in Rock Creek Park. May 27, 1914

This event is part of the current desire of many electric car owners to meet socially, talk about their cars and to teach the broader public about the advantages of electrics, just as owners 100 years ago did.

We are witnessing the rebirth of mass market electric cars with thousands of people getting new EVs each month. The automobile is finally being brought back to its electric roots.

54 electric vehicles gathered for a picnic in Rock Creek Park.

The plug-in car rally planned for Memorial Day may be the biggest gathering of electric vehicle owners in Washington, DC since 1914.

All available spots are currently filled. You may join the waitlist.

Pleased to find a nearby EV interest group, we already are enjoying silence and torque of the EV.

Wow...over 450k miles...more than to the moon and back! Good thing they were electric miles!

    1 · May 29, 2013

    • Andrew D.

We guessed 450,000 miles. Missed it by >< that much. Right afterwards I said to my wife "We really shouldn't have picked such an even number - should have done 451,000." Oh well!

      May 29, 2013

    • Barry L.

      That's why I chose 450,450! So Close!!

      May 29, 2013

  • Andrew D.

What was the total electric miles, and who won the contest?

One other interesting note, Pepco entered a Baker Electric car in the 1915 Electric Sociability Run. Pepco was in the Sociability Run again this year with the Chevy Volt that Barbara drove. So Pepco had a car in the last two Electric Sociability Runs, 98 years apart!

Just in case everyone was wondering, we thought we had 50 cars, but two of the numbers got mixed up in the bottom of the stack, so it was 48 and 1 ZBoard. The group photo did not have all 48 cars. Some people left early and others came later.

Hey everyone I am trying to upload the photos now, however the albums come with a 500 photo limit and I am realizing I don't have any permissions to create albums. So I will upload all family & car shots tonight and when Lanny or Mark create another album or give me permissions to do so I will post the rest. I so had fun today. Thanks!

    Terrence.

That's a good problem to have, and I was wondering about this last night. I created two more called Electric Sociability Run 2 & 3.

Terrence, it was great to meet you Monday! Thank you for all the fabulous photos! I hope to see you next time!

Mark and Lanny - What a great job. I have never seen so many electrics. Kevin had a ball too. Mark - your Z Board was very cool - you should become a dealer for those. My framed photo of the old time electric charging will find a spot of honor. Kudos to our great organizers.

Thanks to all the organizers and sponsors...such a fun event, and so cool to see all the EVs, especially over a dozen Tesla's, and the converted BMW and Porsche roadsters.

And congrats to Kevin Glotfelty on winning the GE Level 2 charger!

Thanks Mike to you and Christa for the coffee and electrons. Great solar setup and Leaf you have. Yes Kevin's win was sweet - that lad has the luck of the Irish for sure!

I think it was a great success. All the planning really paid off. I got the same sense of history that I've always had about us linking to the original Electric Sociability Run. Our group picture is definitely iconic. It rejuvenated my sense of being part of something exciting going on right now.

One of the best times I've had because I got to spend a lot of time with a group of passionate people and I got to put a lot more miles on my ZBoard!

Two notes: Remember that DC has a streetside EV station in two spots: 14th & U NW and 2nd & L Street SE (near Nats Stadium). At the Nats/Canal Park site, there are 4 spots, free 'after-hours' and 75c per hour 8-6.

I had some pro-EV bumper stickers made for EVs for today, and will have them at the meet.

Im driving down from new jersey and plan to charge at white marsh. Where do i go after there? And what time? Rock creek park is where we end up correct? And how many miles is the run? Thanks looking forward to it!

Several hotels in the area have charging stations. In Maryland, The Hotel at Arundel Preserve http://hotelarundel.c... has five ChargePoint stations in their garage. The Sheraton in Tyson’s Corner, Virginia http://www.sheratonty... has two Blink stations available to guests. One of the people attending will be spending Sunday night and charging at the Holiday Inn on Rhode Island Ave NW in DC. http://www.ihg.com/ho...

      May 26, 2013

    • Barry L.

I'm staying in the Holiday Inn on Rhode Island Avenue and have topped off the charge in my Volt. The charger is right at the front door of the Hotel and easy to find. It should be available in the morning if anyone needs it.

      May 26, 2013

Will Level 1 charging be available? I will need to charge to make it home.

      May 25, 2013

there is power at the restroom buildings in the park, but this may not go over well. The next closest place I can think of is the chevron station on Georgia Ave. just south of the beltway @8.5 miles from the park. They are into electric vehicles and have gem type car they use. hope this helps.

It is with great regret that I can't attend this event. My wife has spinal stenosis and needs my help this weekend. Have a great time all.

    May 25, 2013

For those Montgomery County-based attendees who could use a charge before driving over to Glen Echo, I have two 240v outlets on my driveway, along with a single 240v charging cable I'm happy to lend. I'm in downtown Bethesda.

Just send me a note through Meetup.com, or give a ring on[masked], and I'll hook you up!

    1 · May 23, 2013

    • David G.

Myself, Kevin, and a Red Th!nk City could use an hour or so at about 7:30 - 8am, is one still available?

      May 25, 2013

    • Mike H.

Yup! I may not be up by then, but feel free to pull up into the right driveway spot, and you'll see the outlets along the adjacent wall.

Text me at the number above, and I'll text you back with the address. If I'm not up by then, you can grab Starbucks/breakfast within a few blocks walk. Also, let me know if you have your own 240v NEMA L6-20 charger (from EVSEUpgrade.com), or if you need me to leave mine for you.

      May 25, 2013

We are excited about this too. There are reports that there were about 500 Electric Vehicles in Washington, DC in 1914. One out of 10 of them participated in the Sociability Run. I wonder how many EVs are on the road around DC now.
