Hiking at Waterloo Rec

  • April 6, 2013 · 12:00 PM

Hiking and backpacking season is back upon us.

This hike shall take place at Waterloo Recreational Area near Chelsea.  We will be meeting near the Gerald E Eddy Discovery Center.  The hike will be about 8 miles.  I will be carrying my loaded backpack so if you don't want me to feel like I am the only weirdo, then bring yours along.  If you have any questions about backpacking, feel free to ask.

Click here for the satellite map of the area with Discovery Center pinpointed.

Click here for info on Waterloo Rec.

Click here for a map of Waterloo Rec.  Note, the meeting place is near the southeast end of this map.  The area is just north of I-94 between exits 156 and 157.

There are three parking lots by the Discovery Center.  We will be meeting in the first one you pass which is also the biggest.  It is the one with a very prominent port-a-potty in it- it is the only one with a port-a-potty in it (yes, I pick the classiest spots).

Afterwards, we shall go to a fine establishment in nearby Chelsea and toast our accomplishments over a sudsy beverage.  I am not sure on the place yet but they are all close by on Main Street and I will bring directions.

You do need a recreational passport on your license or they might charge you $10 (which is the cost of a passport).  That is, if someone is manning the gates which is unlikely.

Have a question?  Try this place first.  If that does not work than email or call me at[masked]-2351.

See you on Saturday,

Charlie

Is Waterloo Rec a state park? I paid the extra fee when I registered my cars.

    April 5, 2013

    • Charlie

Yes, it is a state park, so you are covered.

Thanks Dylan. I have had so many issues using meetup's map for hikes that I gave up and post it in the description.

are there any road bike trails there?

    April 4, 2013

    • Charlie

Not in the immediate vicinity, but the park has some elsewhere.

I usually go to Aubree's in Chelsea. Where else is good?

    April 5, 2013

    • Charlie

That is in Dexter, right? I would pick clearys or wolverine (Bohemia in Chelsea). wolverine can probably handle the crowd better but clearys is nicer.

      April 5, 2013

    • Charlie

Both... not Bohemia! Interesting spell correction.

My brother will be joining me also :)

This sounds great, I'm going to plan on being there!

    I'm a very probable 'maybe'.

    April 2, 2013

    • Charlie

Remember the good old days of meetup when you could actually say "maybe"...

      April 2, 2013

    • Greg

Back when a "yes" was a "maybe", a "maybe" was a "no", and a "no" meant you'd rather stay at home than hang out with those fools.

I am a somewhat unlikely perhaps myself. 8 AM would have been better but I'll still try.

Would anyone from Ann Arbor like to give Carolyn a ride? See comments here: http://www.meetup.com/a2adventurers/events/112273602/

Would you mind if I cross-post this on Ann Arbor Adventure Club?

    April 1, 2013

    • Charlie

I would say that's OK except that if the numbers get too big, I would like to split the group up. Would you be willing to lead a second group?

      April 1, 2013

    • Dylan C.

Yes I would. Ok, it's posted here:
