Island Lake practice hike with trailside lunch – 9.2 miles – group 2

Since there is a large waiting list for the event starting at 11 AM, let's make some room for others. This is for a second hiking group starting at 12 noon. All event details are the same (copied below) except call me if needed for this 12 noon event. [masked]

Original event:

http://www.meetup.com/MI-adventurers/events/114548732/

We'll hike 5-6 miles, then find a flat area to sit and have lunch. Bring something to sit on and something to eat. If you're only coming for a hike, you just need water, a sandwich, and a folded blanket to sit on.

If you're an aspiring backpacker, load up your pack and bring it! You can test your stove and cook something hot. This is a chance to get used to the weight and get your hiking legs in shape. I'll show everyone what I pack, but I'm not a role model for packing light. I hope some more experienced backpackers will join and show us a better example.

We're hiking the blue trail:
http://photos3.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/1/7/8/6/highres_100446022.jpeg

Everyone hikes at a different speed but let's not split up and get lost on the trail. I'll ask someone to volunteer as leader and sweeper. Whenever we arrive at a trail intersection, stop and take a water break until the sweeper arrives. Then we'll agree on which way to go and proceed. Don't get behind the sweeper.

You will need a recreation passport. The park entrance is on Kensington road, south of Grand River road. When you enter the park, take the first right, then take the second right. There will be a sign that says Trailhead. That road leads to a large parking lot.

Eww, gross! Alright, I checked....I'm all clear. Yay! It's good to know that it takes 36-48 hours for lyme disease to be transmitted, thanks for the information! Have a good day Dylan!

    Hi,

Does anyone know about what time we will complete the hike?
    Thanks!

Probably just after 3. I recently hiked 8.7 miles with a MAC group, and it took 3 hr 8 min time on foot. That was at a pretty good pace but including a few very short stops. I think our snack break was only about 10 minutes though (no cooking), so the meal break on this one is likely going to be quite a bit longer.

Dylan, I was thinking blue trail counterclockwise, but either way. Do you guys want to go opposite directions, so we can do high fives? I'll be there early for the start of your group tomorrow.

    May 3, 2013

    • Dylan C.

Group 1 is going counterclockwise. You and Kat can decide... that would be fun, but I guess it doesn't make too much difference unless someone decides to leave their car at a different parking lot for an early exit. Does anyone know which way the bikes go on blue trail?

fyi, I printed a couple extra copies of this map:

I'm really tempted to RSVP, but since this is my first "hike" of the year, just curious how hard-core everyone is?

    May 3, 2013

    • Danita

I have no clue; just along for the ride (walk)! ;)

Several hours in the Smokies... You're good to go.

Hi! Is the location same as in first group? (Parking lot on Organization C)? Because pin on the map for this group is on Kent lake beach rd/Kensington rd, and there is no parking around.

Would dogs be welcome on the hike?

    May 2, 2013

    • Kat P.

I love dogs. I say bring em. I tried to double check if they are allowed and I am not sure. Anyone else know if they are allowed?

      May 2, 2013

    • Tony

Yep, they are allowed in the park. Just keep in mind there will be a crazy amount of bikes with it being one of the first great weekend days.

      May 2, 2013

  • Staten T. M.

Forgot, I'm doing the bike ride in the am.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
