I heard that Pictured Rock Michigan is one of the most beautiful places in the world. This is arguably the most beautiful shoreline in the United States, with crystal clear water in the largest freshwater lake in the world. Sandstone cliffs of beautiful reddish and orange hues rise vertically out of the shoreline nearly 200 ft. It is one of my places i have to visit before I die.
I booked a lodge for 3 nights to kayak and hike in the area. The cabin has 1 queen bed, 1 full bed, 1 pull out full bed, 15 twins beds and 2 couch. It also has a new hot tub with living room and kitchen.
The dates I booked were
July 4(thurs) to July 7(sun)
& Aug 15(thus) to Aug 18(sun)
For a group of 20, I negotiated down the price of the cabin with hot tub for 3 nights to around $97. (i.e. around $33/night). For the kayak trip, i negotiated with a company called Northern Waters for full day's use of kayaks and equipment to $95 per person. After gas and food which I figure to be another $60... i estimate it will be a total of around $300 for this trip. If there is enough of an interest of 20 people at these prices, I would love to adventure up with you for the summer.

<Update on Kayaks Rentals>
1) Renting Kayak/ equipment for full day guided tour - $95
(I negotiated with Northern Waters to keep the discounted price
for renting Kayaks for us even if we don’t have 20 people)
2) If you bring own kayaks, it’s $20 off the tour - i.e. $75
- IMPORTANT: if you bring your own kayaks for the guided tour, it must be
1) minimum of 15 feet long,
2) have front and back sealed hatches and bulkheads
that can keep water from flooding the ends of the kayak during a capsize.
3) “sit –in” (not sit on top) cockpit,
4) spray skirt & rim opening about 18” x 32”,
5) foot-controlled rudder or retractable skeg.
- You must also have wind and wave experience in their kayak.
NOTE: The shorter 8 to 14 foot recreational kayaks are NOT ALLOWED for the guided tour
as they are unsafe, very slow and hard to steer straight if the winds and waves pick up.
Missing the requirements set above will result in prevention of using your Kayak with the guided tour.
If anyone has any further questions regarding kayak requirements, please contact
Carl at [masked] or[masked]-2323.
!!! Update (July8/13): After talking to the landlord, I got permission to put tents in the backyard for those interested in bringing their own tents and sleeping bags. The cost for the campsite for 3 days will be $40 (i.e. $13/night) and you will still have access to the kitchen, hot tub, and bathroom. With the kayaks for the day ($95) the total will be ($40 + $95) = $135. For those interested in the campsite option, there are 5 opening shown on the google doc. If you signed up by amazon payments and paid $195, we will refund you $60.
!!! IMPORTANT INFO REGARDING KAYAKING (Aug5/13) ... Must Read
1) Kayaking has been moved to Friday because that will give us an extra day opportunity to kayak on Saturday in case weather conditions turns for the worst.
2) On Friday, the group will be divided into starting at 9am and 10am. Each of the 9am and 10am group will have 4 solos each and rest tandems. If you have a strong preference for solos, you can do solos for half of the trip and tandems for other half of the trip.
That way everyone who wants to solo kayak will have a chance.
3) Please call Norther Waters at (906)[masked] to give your name, height and weight so they can get your supplies ready for your arrival on Friday.
