August Kayaking at Pictured Rock (upper penninsula)

I heard that Pictured Rock Michigan is one of the most beautiful places in the world. This is arguably the most beautiful shoreline in the United States, with crystal clear water in the largest freshwater lake in the world. Sandstone cliffs of beautiful reddish and orange hues rise vertically out of the shoreline nearly 200 ft. It is one of my places i have to visit before I die.

I booked a lodge for 3 nights to kayak and hike in the area. The cabin has 1 queen bed, 1 full bed, 1 pull out full bed, 15 twins beds and 2 couch. It also has a new hot tub with living room and kitchen.

The dates I booked were
July 4(thurs) to July 7(sun)
& Aug 15(thus) to Aug 18(sun)

For a group of 20, I negotiated down the price of the cabin with hot tub for 3 nights to around $97. (i.e. around $33/night). For the kayak trip, i negotiated with a company called Northern Waters for full day's use of kayaks and equipment to $95 per person. After gas and food which I figure to be another $60... i estimate it will be a total of around $300 for this trip. If there is enough of an interest of 20 people at these prices, I would love to adventure up with you for the summer.

For Friday, we will be doing the hiking trip on the Chapel  loop trail. The link for the trail is http://www.uptrails.com/ChapelBasin.cfm

<Update on Kayaks Rentals>

1) Renting Kayak/ equipment for full day guided tour - $95

(I negotiated with Northern Waters to keep the discounted price

for renting Kayaks for us even if we don’t have 20 people)

2) If you bring own kayaks, it’s $20 off the tour - i.e. $75

- IMPORTANT:  if you bring your own kayaks for the guided tour, it must be

1) minimum of 15 feet long,

2) have front and back sealed hatches and bulkheads

that can keep water from flooding the ends of the kayak during a capsize.

3) “sit –in” (not sit on top) cockpit,

4) spray skirt & rim opening about 18” x 32”,

5) foot-controlled rudder or retractable skeg.

- You must also have wind and wave experience in their kayak.

NOTE:  The shorter 8 to 14 foot recreational kayaks are NOT ALLOWED for the guided tour

as they are unsafe, very slow and hard to steer straight if the winds and waves pick up.

Missing the requirements set above will result in prevention of using your Kayak with the guided tour.

If anyone has any further questions regarding kayak requirements, please contact

Carl at [masked] or[masked]-2323.

!!! Update (July8/13): After talking to the landlord, I got permission to put tents in the backyard for those interested in bringing their own tents and sleeping bags.  The cost for the campsite for 3 days will be $40 (i.e. $13/night) and you will still have access to the kitchen, hot tub, and bathroom.  With the kayaks for the day ($95) the total will be ($40 + $95) = $135. For those interested in the campsite option, there are 5 opening shown on the google doc. If you signed up by amazon payments and paid $195, we will refund you $60.

!!! IMPORTANT INFO REGARDING KAYAKING (Aug5/13) ... Must Read

1) Kayaking has been moved to Friday because that will give us an extra day opportunity to kayak on Saturday in case weather conditions turns for the worst.

2) On Friday, the group will be divided into starting at 9am and 10am. Each of the 9am and 10am group will have 4 solos each and rest tandems. If you have a strong preference for solos, you can do solos for half of the trip and tandems for other half of the trip.
That way everyone who wants to solo kayak will have a chance.

3) Please call Norther Waters at (906)[masked] to give your name, height and weight so they can get your supplies ready for your arrival on Friday.

Thanks

I"m confused does this mean we have to kayak tandem? Do they not have enough kayaks in general for solo kayakers?

      August 5, 2013

Jaesung. Do you have more details directions? I attempted to Google the Lodge address and it was not registering. I can pretty much figure it out once I get into that area, but for clarity of WHERE it is exactly.

Google maps didn't recognize the address just "Olsen" road, However, Mapquest seems to recognize the address. Perhaps to avoid people getting lost could you provide directions based solely form when someone reaches Shingleton?

    August 5, 2013

    • Jaesung Edward L.

Hey Angela. The address will show up in google maps if you use "N6941 Olson Road, Shingleton,mi" the one i have on up there wrote "Singleton,mi" twice... thus not registering with google. I will fix it now :)

  • Jaesung Edward L.

It is only a few weeks till our Kayak trip to Pictured Rocks and we still didn’t have a pre-meetup yet.
I think it is a good idea if we meet at least once before the trip so everyone can get to know each other and decide how we can carpool up north.
However, the members are spread from as far east as East Lansing and all the way west as Port Huron. :S
For people in Metro Detroit, I was thinking we have 2 pre-meet…
one in Ann Arbor for the south people in Ypsilanti/Ann Arbor /Belleville/ Detroit…
and the other in the Farmington area for those living farther up north (e.g. South Lyon, Plymouth, Westland, Farmington Hill, Farmington)

For the people living outside the Metro Detroit area (e.g. East Lansing, Brooklyn, Port Huron), they can join in through skype to either of the meetings.

    July 25, 2013

    • Jaesung Edward L.

Since most people finish work at 6pm on Saturday and Sunday, I was thinking of starting the pre-meetup next weekend at 9p at a 24hour coffee/donut shop with wi-fi connection. That way, we can skype with the other members as well. The only 24 hours places I know so far are Starbucks and Arborland and Tim Hortons in Farmington Hills, so that was my 1st pick so far. If you have any of better venues, I am all for it.
I know 2 of the people in the meetup are getting married so I’ll fill them in either at the wedding or the week after or meetup. The meetup event for the South group in Ann Arbor is the following
      http://www.meetup.com...

The meetup event for the North group in Farmington Hills is the following
      http://www.meetup.com...

Let me know in the comments if you can make it.

I'd love to join this event but, I haven't learned to kayak yet. I've been canoeing many times and want to learn to kayak. If I take some lessons in June or July will I be ok for the August trip?

    May 26, 2013

  • Jaesung Edward L.

For those who want to bring their own Kayaks, you will save $20 from the guided trip ($95 - $20 = $75). But it is absolutely imperative that you follow the guidelines as listed in the descriptions above for bringing own kayaks for the trip. Otherwise you would be denied the right to use the kayaks for the guided tour with us d/t safety issues.

    May 21, 2013

  • Jaesung Edward L.

Update (May21/13) - Good news guys! I managed to negotiate with the kayaking company (Northern Waters) and Cherry Hill Lodge to keep the discounted price for us even if we don't have 20 people in July. Thus the event will not be cancelled dependent upon the July attendance and will take place as scheduled in Aug. :)

What if you want to bring your own kayak would that knock the price down?

The group discount only works if everyone is okay with the price mentioned above which includes kayaks. If we have a full group of 20 for July and Aug (i.e. total 40 ppl) and there is more space afterwards in the cabin, we maybe able to negotiate bringing our own kayaks for the additional people joined since the original deal with the kayak company was to have 20 people in august and 20 in July for the group to have discount. I will post that option as soon as I know there is 40 people (July and August combined).

I paid, then added my name to the Google Doc, and it was erased. What happened?

I dunno who erased it... it happened when I was at work. I put you back in the list. Someone is breaking the honor system here... hmmm... I'll make sure to add who paid on a daily basis so that it will be accurate.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
