I've talked to a few people who don't have everything they need for backpacking yet. Let's start looking at backpacks, sleeping bags, sleeping mats, chairs, stoves, tents, footwear and other good stuff.
If you have experience backpacking, please come to help answer questions and tell me good places to go. I just started last year.

Come to the row of backpacks at 6:00. After trying one on, we'll wander the store and maybe harass a couple sales associates.
At 7:00, we'll head to a local restaurant (not sure where yet) and talk about backpacking ideas.
Note: You don't need to have all premium REI equipment. I've seen many do fine with decades old backpacks from yard sales, military surplus, etc... I got my super expensive inflatable mattress from REI, but found a suitable lightweight tent for less than $30 at walmart. I recently bought a used Gregory pack on eBay. Lightweight backpacking gear is useful for regular camping too. It has the advantage of fitting more easily in a small car.
