July Kayaking at Pictured Rock (New Cabin and Lower Price)

I heard that Pictured Rock Michigan is one of the most beautiful places in the world. This is arguably the most beautiful shoreline in the United States, with crystal clear water in the largest freshwater lake in the world. Sandstone cliffs of beautiful reddish and orange hues rise vertically out of the shoreline nearly 200 ft. It is one of my places i have to visit before I die.

I booked a lodge for 3 nights to kayak and hike in the area. The cabin has 1 queen pullout bed, 2 full bed, 6 twins beds and 3 rollaway beds. The dates I booked is

<Update on Kayaks Rentals>

1) Renting Kayak/ equipment for full day guided tour - $95

(I negotiated with Northern Waters to keep the discounted price

for renting Kayaks for us even if we don’t have 20 people)

2) If you bring own kayaks, it’s $20 off the tour - i.e. $75

- IMPORTANT:  if you bring your own kayaks for the guided tour, it must be

1) minimum of 15 feet long,

2) have front and back sealed hatches and bulkheads

that can keep water from flooding the ends of the kayak during a capsize.

3) “sit –in” (not sit on top) cockpit,

4) spray skirt & rim opening about 18” x 32”,

5) foot-controlled rudder or retractable skeg.

- You must also have wind and wave experience in their kayak.

NOTE:  The shorter 8 to 14 foot recreational kayaks are NOT ALLOWED for the guided tour

as they are unsafe, very slow and hard to steer straight if the winds and waves pick up.

Missing the requirements set above will result in prevention of using your Kayak with the guided tour.

If anyone has any further questions regarding kayak requirements, please contact

Carl at [masked] or[masked]-2323.

Oh, one more thing. Eric and you Canadian ladies will relate to what my husband found in my ear. It was a tick. And I brought chiggers home in my stomach. Sherah, it appears that is what infiltrated your ankles (my husband is a critical care nurse). I hope nothing else hitch-hiked home with us :)!

    July 9, 2013

    • Taylor K.

omg Judi! That is terrible. Was the tick attached? ugh gives me the chills..

It was attached and borrowed in to the top part of my ear. My husband dug is out with some tweezers. Pretty gross.

Here is a link to the photos I took My battery died just before we got to the arch so if anyone would care to share their pictures of the arch, I'd be ever so grateful. https://plus.google.com/photos/109066384050162073933/albums/5898611559707395777?authkey=CP7-o62VxcW6VQ

Thanks to everyone for (mostly) getting along and being so cool. Thanks Jaesung for organizing this. I think we all learned a thing or two about how to handle big groups in the future. Nice to meet you all and hope to see everyone in the near future! We might be going to the meet-up on Sunday at the beach!

So have we decided on when/where we are meeting? Like I said, we probably won't make the Flint check-point but will shoot for the meet-up across the bridge. What time/where is that? Also, do we need to bring blankets and pillows if we are in the house?

    July 3, 2013

Hey Guys.. lets meet at the Mcdonalds across Mackinaw bridge at U.S. 2 St. Ignace, MI 49781 aroudn 2:30- 2:45p. Blankets and pillows are provided

Will there be group meals and/or eating out for dinner or people can make food or eat out as they want?

    July 3, 2013

    • Jaesung Edward L.

We are thinking of having a sort of potluck... but there are also restraunts in Munising open till 11p. We can eat out if a group of us decides to as well.

      July 3, 2013

  • Sherry

As we have a rather large group for the size of the kitchen, Michael and I were considering bringing a screen tent and table for extra food prep space. It could come in handy in case of rain or an excess of hungry mosquitos. We'd also be happy to share! Would this be fine? Any thoughts?

I can take passengers up to 3. I will be driving a mid-size minivan with good gas mileage (BMX X3). I live in East of Lansing (exit 110 off I96) so need to come meet close to me. My garage will be empty so your car can stay in the garage during the trip.

    June 27, 2013

  • Jaesung Edward L.

UPDATE (May21/13): For those who have missed my previous posts and emails, I will summarize the changes.
There is a new cabin with cheaper price.
For those who have already paid, a partial refund will be given between the old price and new price.
Paypal customers can be refunded the difference right away,
but Amazon payment customers need to wait till Charlie gets back from New Mexico.
If there are any issues, I will pay back by cash when we meet.

    May 21, 2013

    • Jaesung Edward L.

For those who want to bring their own Kayaks, you will save $20 from the guided trip ($95 - $20 = $75). But it is absolutely imperative that you follow the guidelines as listed in the descriptions above for bringing own kayaks for the trip. Otherwise you would be denied the right to use the kayaks for the guided tour with us d/t safety issues.

Jessica, Dustin, Kyle and I are going to drive up together. Is there any other reason that we need to attend the prep meeting? Please let me know! Thanks!

    June 15, 2013

    • Jaesung Edward L.

Hey Taylor. Yep... the meeting is important because for some reason the cabin is not showing up in google maps (Prob b/c it is in a national park) and after we cross Mackinaw bridge the cell phone reception cuts out unless you have Verizon. It is important we we all go over the directions and what we need to bring for the trip to be successful.

      June 17, 2013

  • Kristen F.

I can take 1 or 2 people. Need to meet in Okemos (east of Lansing) and you can keep your car in my garage while we are gone. I will not be able to make it to any of the prep meeting. If interested - we can exchange numbers.

    June 15, 2013

  • Jaesung Edward L.

Hey guys. In order to find a good location for our pre-meeting before our trip, can you tell me which city you guys are from?... or can you recommend a good place with internet where we can meet... preferentially after 6pm on a weekend.

Hey John. We didn't know if you were coming, so Charlie at Michigan Adventures Club is going to refund your payment through Amazon Payments.

      June 6, 2013

  • Matthew H.

I'm just coming off 2 month unemployment stint, so I wasn't really able to sign up for this trip. However, I would like to do something similar over the summer. I have five close friends who are experienced(weekly) river kayakers. I was just wondering if you really need the 15 footers in the areas near the photos or if that is just a liability issue with the company? Is a standard 10.5' OK? I know from reviews that people have taken them out near shore in the Atlantic.

    June 3, 2013

    • Jaesung Edward L.

It's just a liability with the company Matt. In order to join any guided tours which they are responsible for our safety, the require proper equipment from people bringing their own kayaks if we want to participate in their guided tour of pictured rocks.

      June 3, 2013

    May 27, 2013

    • Jaesung Edward L.

are the people who signed up first going to have priority in getting the twin beds?
      - The beds as described in the description
will always be on a 1st come 1st serve basis for whomever puts down the down payment 1st.

      May 27, 2013

    • Jaesung Edward L.

Are we going to have a pre-meeting before the trip? If so when?
      - Yes. Since more people are joining, I was going to have the pre-meetup 1 or 2 weeks before the event (e.g. sometimes after June 15). This is important as we need to discuss rides, directions, and preparations.

      May 27, 2013

  • Jessica P.

Hi Jaesung, my boyfriend, Dustin, and I would like to reserve a spot to camp on property and do the kayaking trip. How do we go about doing that? What would the price be?

    May 27, 2013

    • Jessica P.

My boyfriend and I signed up through PayPal. We put ourselves down on the goggle docs how do we get put on the list that confirms we are going?

Update (March26/13) - After 6 hours of driving, I made it to Munising to book the cabin and Kayaks for the group trip. Good news is that we can fit 3 more twin size mattresses in the living room. I posted the 3 additional mattresses about 1h ago and 3 already got booked within that time. :S Our landlord Dorothy also gave us permission to set up tents in the back yard for any additional people if they bring their own tents and sleeping bags. She asks people who bring their tents to pay $20 per person for the entire 3 nights stay…. cheaper than any other campground if you can find one that is open for the season. I will upload videos of cabin by tonight so you can all see what our cabin looks like.

    May 26, 2013

  • Ramy m.

Is there a campground nearby that area. I was thinking of also going and just camping out?

    May 23, 2013

    • Jaesung Edward L.

There are lots of campgrounds near munising... however, I think they are all booked up for the month of July and Aug.

      May 24, 2013

    • Jaesung Edward L.

Hey Ramy... i got good news... If you bring your own tent and sleeping bags, it turns out the landlord allows people to set up tents in her back yard of the cabin. The tent site will be much cheaper than any other camspites ($20 for the full 3 nights) and you will also have access to the bathroom, kitchen, etc. I will update it in the the descriptions for anyone interested in joining.
