Hiking at Holly Recreational Area (10 miles)

  • Jul 14, 2013 · 12:00 PM

Basics:
This hike will be around 10 miles done at a moderate pace...we will be out about 4-4.5 hours.

We will take some breaks to eat, drink, and be merry. Bring water, a snack, comfy shoes, and appropriate clothing. Because I want to encourage water drinking, I will mention there are bathrooms (well, port-a-johns) at the trail head and the 4th and 7th mile of the hike.

As always, I shall be wearing my loaded backpack. If you have empathy for me, go ahead and bring yours.

Directions
Holly Recreational Area (in Holly, duh):

***Map of meeting place- use this to get directions:***

Be careful, it is really easy to get lost.  Instructions from Grange Hall Road...

1) Take Grange Hall road to McGinnis Road, which is right before Grange Hall veers left.

2) On McGinnis road there will be a sign for Holly Rec- turn right there. If you hit a dirt road, you have gone too far.

3) You enter the park, go past the ranger station, and keep straight.  About 0.6 miles up there is a left turn into the parking lot (it is the first left you can make). The turn has a sign which points to a trail and shelter.  If you get to the bridge, you have gone too far.

4) There are 2 parking lots here- fork to the right.

We are meeting at the parking lot with is at #18 on the trail map.  Here is another map of out meet location which is at the red circle.

Costs:
Since this is a state park you will need a recreation passport ($10 when you renew your license). If you do not have one, you can purchase it at the ranger station.

Afterwards:

A good place to have a celebratory drink and eats is Red Knapps in Clarkston which is about 10 miles south of the park on US-24 (Dixie Hwy).  It is on the left side of the road right after you pass MI-15 (Ortonville Road).  Please bring directions with you if you plan on going to Red Knapps.

Direction from Holly Rec to Red Knapps

Try here first.  If that does not help then email me or call[masked]

So, are you claiming to have a small backpack? Or are your backpacks starbuck sized?

I have a big and a huge backpack, so I mean the smaller one :-)
