Backpacking: Jordan River Pathway (18 miles, 1 night)

  • Oct 4, 2013 · 9:00 PM

The Plan
Camp Friday night (10/4) in a state forest campground near the trail then hike the Jordan River Pathway (18 miles) on Saturday and Sunday. There is a walk-in campground in the middle of the trail for Saturday night. The trail is about 240 miles from Detroit, or 3.5 hour drive.

Disclaimer: The trail is an 18 mile loop (10 miles one day, 8 the other). This is not a trail for first timers! Make sure you are comfortable carrying your backpack for 10 miles and that you have all the equipment neccessary to make the trip.

Details
Friday: meet at Graves Crossing State Forest Campground
Graves Crossing Website
Location of Graves Crossing on google maps

The campground is at the end of Crawford Road in Mancelona I will be arriving around 7:00pm. However, it does not matter how late you get there. I am just using Graves Crossing as a staging area to go to Jordan River on Saturday morning.

Campsites: $13 and can accommodate 4 people (2 tents). There are no reservations- you pay at a tube when you enter the campground. There are only 10 sites there and we should be the only people there. When you arrive please post something on the board that says who you are and which campsite you are at.

Saturday and Sunday: Do Jordan River Trail
Jordan River Trail Website
Location of Jordan River trailhead on google maps
Direction from Graves Crossing to Jordan River Pathway

There is a walk-in campsite in the middle of the trail that has water, pit toilets, and a large grassy area (great for playing frisbee!). Campsites are $13 and accommodate 4 people (2 tents)- just like Graves Crossing.

Sunday after trail:
Probably stop in Gaylord or Grayling and have a celebratory meal and drink (details on location will come later).

Carpooling
is highly encouraged.  Please use the forum below to give your location and time you can leave on Friday.  There are plenty of park-and-rides right off the freeways.

Excellent trip! I left with both a sense of accomplishment and slight INSANITY!!! Just kidding (maybe). Thanks everyone for a great weekend!! See you all again soon! Everyone deserves kudos for their contributions, but I think Peter gets the glory, honor, and distinction for providing his labor-savings, fire-starting, corrugated-wax thing-a-ma-jig when all else was lost!

Rod, I define "success" as a trip where no one falls off a cliff... ;) A somewhat low threshold... !!!! It was way hillier than Manistee, that's for sure! But, very do-able. It made me think what a challenge mountains would be!

    • Rod

Lee - - I checked out everyone's pictures. The fall colors are GREAT! Also, I see shorts & short sleeves, so the weather must have been ok. I'm glad everyone had a good time.

I just bought a map for a portion of the Bruce peninsula trail. Later this mo?

Either way, I'd be happy to let you post. Also, I have the Bruce Trail Guide and other stuff I collected over the years if you want more info.

Hey, supposedly less then four hours from Detroit! Would there be any leaves left?

Great fun and company. Thanks for the info on mega doses of salt, white grains, whoopy knots, etc.

Can someone recommend a good rain shell? Mine apparently sux.

    October 7, 2013

    • Charlie

I have been using REI's shell (pants and jacket) for 5 years and it has done a great job. This includes four days of pouring rain in Alaska. I think I have their pre-eVent shells.

Any of you guys want to snowmobile the Jordan Valley trail let me know I live 10 mins away from it and I snowmobiled it many times this past winter. Start in Gaylord and meet me there, just let me know when. (obviously when snow is here , lol)

  • Jimbo

Hey guys. Hate to do this but I'm going to have to back out. My brakes cost twice as much as expected and I won't be able to make it now. Hope you guys have good luck with the weather.

    October 4, 2013

    • Jimbo

Yeah...not about gas money. I spent the money on brakes that I was intending to use to get rain gear. The stuff I have is not going to work and I don't want to be miserable. I appreciate the offer though.

I am leaving my place in a few minutes then I will stop at Meijer along the way. I will probably be at the campsite around 6:30. Look for the maroon ford focus.

    October 4, 2013

  • Lee K

Jimbo, three of us are a carpool, planning to leave Brighton around 3:30. We can wait a little if you're still jammed up. Let us know what's going on! it's five86-9two5 1 four 60.

    October 4, 2013

  • Lee K

Hey Ed, I'll post my number until you get this, then I'll delete, as I usually don't post it. it's five86-9two5 1 four 60. Please call me asap

    October 4, 2013

  • Lee K

Hey everyone! Just want to warn you there is a one hour lag time between when you post, and when everyone else is notified by e-mail that a "new comment" has been posted. So, if you haven't already, send me your cell phone number. So far I know that Jim S (new guy, not organizer Jim S) probably is not going, and Peter is definitely driving alone. If Charlie carpools, it will be with folks from the west side of the state.

Thus, so far it's Ed and me for sure, good chance Staten, and maybe Jimbo. I'm thinking 3 pm in Brighton might work. We have not decided on a driver yet. Thus, four max. What does everyone think of that?

    October 3, 2013

    • Lee K

Ed, your phone # didn't work. Please call Staten below...

      Typo. Fat fingered previous number

I was thinking afterwards to go to the Railside Bar and Grill in Elmira (about 5 miles away). Address: 501 Underwood
    Elmira, MI 49730

    October 4, 2013

  • Charlie

I am coming up alone. I am not sure exactly when I will leave. I am driving a maroon focus. Also, it looks like now we can expect temps to stay between 55 and 65 the whole time with a persistent threat of rain.

Hey everyone. I have to find a place to put brakes on my car before I can leave tomorrow. I'm not sure Howe long it will take so I can't commit to a car pool right now. I'll post again tomorrow once I have a better idea of when I can leave.

    October 3, 2013

    • Lee K

OK, but you know I have a trusty minivan that can take us all, if need be.

      October 3, 2013

Yeah...I just need to get them done tomorrow as I won't have time next week

Im leaving from Ann Arbor at 2pmish Friday. Have a truck. Anyone want to pool?

    1 · October 3, 2013

    • Lee K

Staten, Ed and I could meet up with you at the Brighton carpool lot. How does that sound? I don't have your number. Your truck or my van... Jim S and Jimbo are uncommitted, but of course they know it's first come first served...

Folks, today it was supposed to be 78 and sunny here... Well, at 3:26 p.m. it's 68 and totally cloudy! And, that prediction was given at 8 am this morning!!! Thus, I am not too concerned about the weather report for this weekend-- especially this far out!! Let's go have a blast!

    October 1, 2013

    • Charlie

And if it rains, we will just have better stories to tell afterwards. Double that if it snows.

      October 1, 2013

  • Rod

Would really like to do this trip but I see a 60 - 70% chance of rain on Friday & Saturday with 42 degree low Saturday night. (Two backpack trips with rain in one season are enough for me.) I hope it turns out better for you guys. Enjoy!!

    September 30, 2013

I love a good cleansing hike! I'm 100% stoked for this weekend, in case anybody was wondering.

Charlie, I am out for this. The weather is 60-70% rain for Fri/Sat 30% for Sun and some wind out of the North. Wish it looked better and I hope the weather man is wrong. Gonna take the weekend to instal my new flooring.

Thanks for the tent offer Lisa, and Lee.. I'm going to wait until I buy all my gear this winter.. I'm taking a couple trips out west next summer and I plan on joining this group a lot next year as well.. have a good time.

    September 30, 2013

  • Brooke

We were there in August. There were parts of the trail that were completely blocked with really big downed trees. Hopefully, NPS cleaned up a bit.

    September 30, 2013

  • Lee K

Looking for form a carpool. I can leave around 5 or 6 pm, but I'm trying to switch things around so that I could leave around 1or 2 pm. Royal Oak area... I would go in another vehicle, but I am also offering my minivan that holds 4 others comfortably (I could take 5-6 others, besides me if 2 or 3 go in the back bench seat.) I just had the oil changed, and my mechanic gave my van a clean bill of health!

Usually, what we've done in the past is whoever drives does not pay for gas, as there is wear and tear on the vehicle. Any other ideas?

I am not in a rush to return on Sunday, so my ideal time to return is after the Gaylord lunch on Sunday. Let me know soon! -- Lee

I live 20 mins from the Jordan Valley.. If anyone has any extra gear, (backpack, sleeping bag, tent), I can go.. I rented this stuff earlier in, the summer and I plan on buying it this winter. I can pay to use it, just send me a message on here if you have anything, thanks.

    September 29, 2013

    • Lee K

      I have an extra tent.

      September 30, 2013

  • Lisa

We have a 40lb dog that backpacks. She's young and shy at first. Does anyone have a problem with her coming along? Also, Chris, I have an extra solo tent you can use, but be warned- it's tiny (REI quarter dome).

    September 29, 2013

    • Lee K

Someone took a dog to Manistee and 18 people thought it was fine.

I can car pool anywhere from North of Toledo.

    September 29, 2013

I live in Kalamazoo and can leave as early as 12:30. I also do not mind going up the 127/75 if it means carpooling.
