Hiking at Highland Recreational Area (7-8 miles ~ 3 hours)

  • Nov 10, 2013 · 12:00 PM

What is the plan?
Seemingly random people will flock to a parking lot at Highland Rec.  A truly strange occurrence will then be witnessed.  The pathological nature of these strangers will compel them to walk together for about seven miles only to return to the exact same parking lot.  The purpose of such a pointless waste of energy is currently being studied by sociologists from top universities.  Some of these people, the hike leader included, will waste even more energy by donning a fully loaded backpack.  Then, as is natural for self-destructive creatures, they shall go to a not-so-finer establishment and partake in mood enhancing drugs thereby destroying any potential advantage gained by their exercise.

Where do we meet?
At the parking lot/picnic area on the south east side of Haven Hill Lake (meeting place is circled on the Highland Rec Map- the road is Haven Rd).  It is the first right turn after you pass the ranger station- you cannot see it on google maps unless you turn on the satellite view.

This is a state park so you need the Recreation Pass on your license plate.  If you do not have a Pass, the worse that happen is a ranger will put a ticket on your car and you will have to pay the $10 for the pass.

A celebratory drink and food at Billy's Tipin Inn
It is exactly 1.1 mile east of the park on M-59/Highland Road.  It is on the left (north) side right when the island separating east and west bound traffic goes away.

address: 6707 Highland Road, White Lake, MI

As I recall this hike has a shorter option - is that right?

You can shave off about 1 mile from the hike but that is about it. The trail is mostly a big loop.
