Hiking at Waterloo Rec (about 8 miles, 3 hours)

  • January 12, 2014 · 12:00 PM

Waterloo Take 2:
I am being lazy and just copying the hike from 1/5/14 that had to be cancelled due to weather.  So, it's the same thing but one week later.

The Plan:

A bunch of people gather on what will most likely be a gray and cold day in a depressing parking lot with a big port-a-potty (nothing symbolic here).  Dejected, these people will proceed in a cult-like manner to walk with each other at a moderate pace for about eight miles.  After being stripped of all their humanity, they will seek to gain redemption at a local establishment specializing in mood altering beverages.

The Meeting Place:
This hike shall take place at Waterloo Recreational Area northwest of Chelsea.  We will be meeting near the Gerald E Eddy Discovery Center.  There are three parking lots by the Discovery Center.  We will be meeting at the first one you pass which is also the biggest.

Click here for the satellite map of the area with Discovery Center pinpointed.

Click here for info on Waterloo Rec.

Click here for a map of Waterloo Rec.  Note, the meeting place is near the southeast end of this map.  The area is just north of I-94 between exits 156 and 157.  The easiest way to get there is to get off on exit 157 North (Pierce Road) and then follow the signs to the Gerard Eddy Discovery Center (they start immediately after you exit).

Other Stuff:
Pets are allowed.
Bring snacks and water.
There is an outhouse about halfway through the trail.

You do need a recreational passport on your license or they might charge you $11 (which is the cost of a passport).  That is, if someone is manning the gates which is unlikely.

We shall go to the Chelsea Alehouse in nearby Chelsea.  Address: 420 N Main St #100, Chelsea, MI 48118 (east side of M-52, just north of the railroad- there is also a teddy bear place real close to it).  Please make sure you have directions to the bar if you plan on going.

What a great day for a hike and lunch outing. Thanks Charlie for planning, and thanks to everyone for explaining the rules to that crazy board game. I'll have to brush up on my skills to make a better showing next time. :-)

hmmmm, i thought long and hard about it, but it's a bit too far in the wrong direction for me today. next time. (have you ever wondered what compels people to leave comments that, for all intents and purposes, have no impact on the event in question at all?) (i do:-)

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
