Hiking at Brighton Rec (about 7 miles, 3 hours)

  • Jan 18, 2014 · 12:00 PM

The Plan:
People drive many miles to go to a parking lot and meetup with others who have also driven many miles.  Then these people abandon their cars and take off on foot to follow some weirdo (me) , who many have never meet before, into the woods at a moderate pace for about 7 miles.  They then return to their cars and go to a local dining/drinking establishment to so they can forget the whole charade. What compels them to do this is the subject of a TLC documentary that will air in 2015.  It has also probably been blogged about somewhere.

The Meeting Place:
We shall meet at the parking lot just south of Bishop Lake Road and just east of Bishop Lake.

Click here for the satellite map of the area with parking area pinpointed.

Click here for info on Brighton Rec.

Click here for a map of Brighton Rec.  We are meeting at the trailhead (big star on map) off Bishop Lake Road just east of Bishop Lake.

Other Stuff:
Pets are allowed.
Bring snacks and water.

Costs:

You do need a recreational passport on your license or they might charge you $11 (which is the cost of a passport).

Afterwards:
We shall go to the Jameson's Irish Pub just east of US-23.  Address: 9555 Village Place Blvd. • Brighton, MI 48116 (in Green Oaks Village Plaza).  Please make sure you have directions to the bar if you plan on going.

Hi Folks. Sorry. I 'm having difficulty finding the trail head in time. I'll have to try next time. What a beautiful place! I hope you lead a hike here again.

Would any one object if I brought my dog? Xander is a 60 lb Belgian Tervuren(think fox like sheppard). Very friendly but I know some people have allergies or are nervous near big dogs.
    Thanks
    Zoe

I'll probably bring mine as well. Unless its colder than mid-twenties.

I really would like to try one of these hiking events, but I'm not sure about the gear?! What kind of hiking boots do you need for the snow? What kind of things should you bring?

Most people wear a water-proof hiking boot. The packed snow could make the ground uneven which wears at your ankles. I, personally, wear a just a regular non-waterproof hiking shoe. Even wet, my feet stay warm if I am moving and my ankles have never been a problem.
I would say the best thing, clothing wise, is to layer. You will warm up on the hike. Otherwise, bring a snack and some water. The worse things that case happen is you tire too quickly, in which case there are shorter ways back to the car or people sweat and they get cold when they stop for too long (usually only a problem when you get back to the car).
