Hiking along the Waterloo-Pinckney Trail (about 7 miles, 3 hours)

  • Feb 2, 2014 · 12:00 PM

The Plan:
We are going to do a section of the Waterloo-Pinckney that is my favorite.  This is a tough section with lots of hills and the snow should make it even more fun.  We will be hiking at a moderate pace for about three hours, the mileage will depend upon trail conditions.  And, yes, we will be done in time for you to get to the all-important game with the all-important commercials.  If you are like me and could care less, then you can follow me to the local brewery.

The Meeting Place:
This hike shall take place in Waterloo Recreational Area northwest of Chelsea.  We will be meeting in the grassy area (well, currently snowy and flat) on the south side of McClure just across from the headquarters.  There are a few parking spots there but we also have permission to park in the employee area just east of the headquarters- where the garages are.

Click here for the satellite map of the area which shows the headquarters and the parking around it.

Click here for a map of Waterloo Rec.  Note, the meeting place is near the southeastish end of this map on McClure Road just west of Ridge Road.  The headquarters is mostly north and slightly west of I-94 exit 156 (Kalmbach Road).  There are scattered signs for the headquarters when you get off the exit but make sure you have a map of the area.

Do not go to the Discovery Center or simply type in Waterloo rec in your GPS.  You will go to the wrong place and be summarily mocked.  The mocking technique we are currently employing is: point-and-laugh.

Other Stuff:
Pets are allowed.
Bring snacks and water.

You do need a recreational passport on your license or they might charge you $11 (which is the cost of a passport).  That is, if someone is manning the gates which is unlikely.

We shall go to the Chelsea Alehouse in nearby Chelsea.  Address: 420 N Main St #100, Chelsea, MI 48118 (east side of M-52, just north of the railroad- there is also a teddy bear place real close to it).  Please make sure you have directions to the bar if you plan on going.
