Hiking at Seven Lakes (~8 miles, 3 hours)

  • Mar 22, 2014 · 12:30 PM

The Plan:
A bunch of people walk around in a big circle followed by sustenance and drink, and we call it hiking because that sounds better than "walking".  The hike will take about 3 hours done at a moderate pace with stops to eat and drink and will take place at one of my favorite spots in southeast Michigan:  Seven Lakes.  Pets on leashes are allowed.  It is also recommended to keep the organizer on a leash.

Seven Lakes Rec Area (between Holly and Fenton):
Seven Lakes Website
Map of Seven Lakes Park (We will be doing a counter-clockwise loop around the park)
Google map of location of meeting spot (We are meeting at the Big 7 Shelter Area)

Directions:
I-75 TO THE PARK: Take I-75 to Grange Hall Road.  Take Grange Hall West to Fish Lake Road.  Take Fish Lake Road north to the park entrance on the left.

US-23 TO THE PARK: Take US 23 to exit 79, Silver Lake Road.  Take West Silver Lake Road going East through Fenton.  Silver Lake Road will become Main, then Grange Hall Road.  From Grange Hall Road turn left (north) onto Fish Lake road.   Take Fish Lake Road north to the park entrance on the left.

WARNING: the only entrance to Seven Lakes Rec Area is off of Fish Lake Road (east side of park- some mapping programs have another entrance on the north end but that is a service road you cannot drive on).

ONCE IN THE PARK: When you enter the park, you take the main park road 1.5 miles and then turn left at the Big 7 North and South Shelter Area.  Go to the left side of the parking lot and take it to its end- that is where we will be.  If you hit the boat launch, you have gone too far.

Costs:
Since this is a state park you will need a Recreational Passport ($11).  There is little chance that anyone will be around to sell you the pass.  If you park without a pass and a ranger comes by, they will give you a ticket for the price of the pass ($11) and then send you a pass in the mail.

Afterwards:
Thanks for the suggestion from Mark, Iggy, and Patrick.  I have decided on Blackthorn Pub as the place to refuel.  It is at  105 S. Saginaw, Holly, 48442.  Here are directions from the park to the Pub.  If you plan on going to the Pub afterwards, please make sure you bring directions

It's amazing how something that at first seems like a bummer can turn into a random adventure and meeting good people. Thanks John for helping this bum wheel out.

Look for people congregating near the parking lot. I will also be there early and I have a maroon Ford Focus.

I might make it, I've been wanting to look for chaga. There isn't a lot of birch, (that I've found), at 7 lks. But I certainly haven't hiked the whole place yet. Mark M is right, Sagebrush is usually packed. Penalty Box would be more accommodating for a large group.

In Holly there is Black Thorn which serves up scale bar food, with plenty of drink choices. In Fenton I would suggest The Penalty Box and they can easily take a big group. Of course as Patrick suggested Sagebrush is always a good choice, if you can in the place :)
