Hiking along the Waterloo-Pinckney Trail (about 7 miles, 3 hours)

  • Mar 29, 2014 · 2:00 PM

The Plan:
We are going to do a section of the Waterloo-Pinckney that is a tougher section with lots of hills (bring your walking sticks & trekking poles).  We will be hiking at a moderate pace for about three hours, the mileage will depend upon trail conditions.  We should be done by about 5:30 with enough time for you to get home for dinner or follow myself and others to a local restaurant for food, drinks and good company.

The Meeting Place:
This hike shall take place in Waterloo Recreational Area northwest of Chelsea.  We will be meeting in the grassy area on the south side of McClure just across from the headquarters.  There are a few parking spots (about 8) there but we also have permission to park in the employee area just east of the headquarters- where the garages are. Also, if you can please try to car pool.

Click here for the satellite map of the area which shows the headquarters and the parking around it.

Click here for a map of Waterloo Rec.  Note, the meeting place is near the southeastish end of this map on McClure Road just west of Ridge Road.  The headquarters is mostly north and slightly west of I-94 exit 156 (Kalmbach Road).  There are scattered signs for the headquarters when you get off the exit but make sure you have a map of the area.

Warning:
Do not go to the Discovery Center or simply type in Waterloo rec in your GPS.  You will go to the wrong place and be summarily mocked.  The mocking technique we are currently employing is: point-and-laugh.

Other Stuff:
Pets are allowed.
Bring snacks and water.

Costs:

You do need a recreational passport on your license or they might charge you $11 (which is the cost of a passport).  That is, if someone is manning the gates which is unlikely.

Afterwards: Smokehouse 52 BBQ in Chelsea. 125 S. Main Street, Chelsea, Michigan 48118 It is right in downtown off of M-52, north of I-94.  They have some vegetarian friendly dishes and a whole gluten free menu upon request. They also serve your typical bar drinks and beer refreshments.  They do take reservations for parties of 6 or more so I will call them ahead of time on Saturday.

Some of you may have already noticed, I'm not going to make it to this hike. (family obligations) I'm sure you are all very bummed about it, I know I am. But it will be okay. Just think positive, press forward and try to enjoy the hike without me. (Cue in the sound of a "sigh" and "sniffles".)

New plan... I just heard from Patrick that he's offering rides to Kat, Emily and her friend all from the Royale Oak area. It makes more sense to setup a separate carpool from the Ann Arbor area. Seema, do you mind riding with me instead of Patrick? Rachel, do you mind riding with us? Anyone who wants to carpool from A2 should tell us and be here before 1:15 https://maps.google.com/maps/place?ftid=0x883cac1b294ff6eb:0x25bdce1212aadfa5

I'm driving a silver vibe. If you don't see me, please call[masked]four-5187

Coming from Royal Oak, would like to carpool. I have only a 2 seater, but can pick up one other on the way.

Kat, I thought you would be riding with Patrick from Royale Oak? I94 is way off your route. Would it help if I offer to pickup Rachel and meet you at the Plymouth Road park and ride?

I'm in Redford at 5 and Beech Daly, just a mile from telegraph and 96 if that would be easier for you.

Since parking is limited, I would like to carpool as well ( I can drive or be passenger). I live in the ypsilanti/ann arbor area.

I'm considering joining you, but am concerned about the level of difficulty. I've never used and do not own a walking stick or trekking poles. I walk/run on the trails at Bishop Lake Rec area by my house. Are the trails at Waterloo significantly more difficult?

    March 25, 2014

    • Emily D.

      Hi Connie:
I have a pair of trekking poles. If I'm able to go we can each use one!

Emily, Thank you for your offer, but I think factoring in the possibility of ice/slush/snow I best pass on this one. I can't afford an injury as my son is getting married in a few weeks!
