Picture Rock Hiking/Camping/Backpacking & The Porcupine Mnts.

  • July 19, 2014 · 8:00 AM

The More Details Part:

I would bring a day pack along with your backpack.  All the normal pack gear as some of our hikes will be after we have set up camp for the day and you may want to bring snacks, towel, camera, your water bottle & filter, map, bug spray etc.

Weather: The weather can be anywhere from 80 degrees during the day to 40 degrees at night.  Pack accordingly.

MUST HAVES:

WATER: There is NO fresh water source once we are in the back country of Picture Rock.  You MUST have a water filter with you or have permission to borrow someone's, no exceptions!  All the campgrounds with car camping will have water.

COMPASS & MAPS:  Maps are located below, make sure to print and have your own copy along with a compass. http://www.nps.gov/piro/planyourvisit/upload/BackcountryMap.pdf

 http://www.nps.gov/piro/planyourvisit/upload/BackcountryMileageChart.pdf

http://www.michigandnr.com/Publications/PDFS/RecreationCamping/Porkies_Unit.pdf

DO NOT LEAVE A CAMPSITE FOR A HIKE WITHOUT THE ABOVE ITEMS.

GROUP: We are hiking as a group.  Please do not leave the group without letting everyone know where you are going.  There are lots of cliffs, this is bear country and it's for your own safety.  None of the planned hikes are that long but they will be strenuous in places.

FOOD: The only planned meal is Wednesday (lunch in Munising) on our way to the Porcupine Mountains campground.  Outside of that bring what you would like to eat.  Coolers can stay in the cars on Saturday & Sunday evening.  Wednesday we can refill them if needed when we drive through Munising for Wednesday, Thurs. & Friday.  If you have a stove and fuel go ahead and bring it along. If you would like to share some ones please bring your own fuel.

Hi, at Birch Run exit tomorrow, is there park and ride or where do we meet ?

    July 18

    • Robyn

There are a bunch of hotels right there a the exit. There is a comfort inn just east of I-75 on the northeast corner of 54 & Dixie Hwy.

      July 18

    • Wendy P.

I hope not! Well, looks like just in the morning and only 30% chance. Let's all cross our fingers that we wake up to sunshine all day. :)

Connie your son can take the extra spot.

    1 · July 17

  • Robyn

I have to do a deposit for the Kayaking and since I haven't heard otherwise I am guessing all 6 of us are a go for that on Sunday. It is $129 and they supply everything but the guy I talked to said its been a bit cooler on the water so you may want to bring a sweatshirt. If it ends up raining/storming we will have to find another way to occupy ourselves on Saturday :)

    July 15

    • Wendy P.

The weather for kayaking on Sunday at Pictured Rocks is showing a 72 high with mostly cloudy skies. No rain. Yay!

I happened to see this event this week and thought I should mention I was up there over fourth of July week for backpacking around the Coves/Chapel area and the mosquitoes and black flies were pretty extreme. Make sure you pack bug management with sprays and at minimum head nets. Pants and loose long sleeve shirts would help too.

    July 15

  • lisa m.

i cant get the first map to print! if anyone can get it to print and can print me a copy I would oh so appreciate it! :I)

    July 14

  • lisa m.

      July 14

    • lisa m.

I was just gonna bring my own food. I'm vegetarian and most ppl aren't. As far as driving, I can meet on i75 and either drive or drive w/ someone. I'd probably make sense to take as few vehicles as possible

    July 3

    • Robyn

I think Connie is making her own arrangements, something about her son....

      July 11

    • connie

I will be there at Birch Run exit by 9:30am.

      July 13

  • Robyn

We need to be at the campground on Saturday 7/19 by 2pm at the latest for check in. I believe the drive is 5 to 6 hours. I will be leaving the area (Brighton) around 7am. In order to figure out car pools we need to figure out where everyone is coming from. I can fit 2 more people in my car who can meet me either near Whitmore Lake/Brighton area or somewhere along US 23 or I-75.

    July 3

    • Robyn

Gotcha, that is too far south, I hit 75 in Flint. Do you want to meet at Birch Run exit?

      July 6

    • lisa m.

That's fine. I have something to return at merell anyhow.

      July 13

  • lisa m.

Does anyone wanna share my tent? At least for the backpacking portion????

    July 11

    • Robyn

I'm set as well, I just have a solo tent. I did however pick up a twin air mattress for the non-backpacking nights to throw my sleeping bag on and save my back haha. Thanks for the offer though!

      July 11

    • lisa m.

      Bummer! ;-/

      July 11

  • Robyn

Food.....anyone have suggestions on how they would like to work food? Munising does have stores that carry food as well as some restaurants.

    July 3

    • Wendy P.

I was just going to bring my own. I'm a fussy eating and not into fast food. Hoping to prepare most of my meals in the woods. (An escape from the restaurant scene.) Although, I'm sure an occasional restaurant stop will be in the picture when I get tired of cooking towards the end of the week. :)

      July 3

    • lisa m.

I'm thinking the same thing Wendy...

Hi Robyn, 4 of us from the Louisville Hiking Meetup are coming up with our kayaks to paddle the lakeshore. We might have some down time and would like to get some hiking in as well. Maybe we could link up with you all for some of the time?

    June 5

  • Robyn

I just booked out site for Union Bay (Modern Campground) Wed. & Thurs. night and our site for Prisque (Rustic) Friday night. It's $15 per person total. 6 people is the limit at the sites and 2 cars. There is no tent limit but keep it small.

I can always drive too if someone else wants to navigate. Just sayin...

    June 3

    Hello!
My plans continue to change. . . I would love to join you, but now I will have my 2 kids (10 & 7 yo). Since we can not make the Mtns backpacking trip, I do not feel appropriate invading on this official meet-up. Our plan is to arrive Friday morning, July 18, 2014 to one of the Pictured Rocks drive in sites, day hike through the weekend, possible Kayak on Sunday or Monday. Would love to hike with you if it works out.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
