Hiking at Holly Recreational Area (10 miles- 4 hours)

  • Apr 20, 2014 · 11:00 AM

Note- the hike was switched to 11:00am (it originally was 12 noon).  This is because the restaurant closes early that day.

I know, I know, there is some important celebration today which I believe harkens to the time when humanity defeated the invading alien mutant bunnies (who left colored eggs all over the place- quite a mess).  For those of you who are not patriotic enough to honor such a huge militaristic achievement, I have planned a hike for you.

The plan:

This hike will be around 10 miles done at a moderate pace...we will be out about 4-4.5 hours.  There is an option to stop at 7 miles- but you will miss the best part of the hike if you do that.

We will take some breaks to eat, drink, and be merry. Bring water, a snack, comfy shoes, and appropriate clothing. Because I want to encourage water drinking, I will mention there are bathrooms (well, port-a-johns) at the trail head and the 4th and 7th mile of the hike.  Dogs are allowed

I shall be wearing my loaded backpack for this hike. If you have empathy for me, go ahead and bring yours.

Holly Recreational Area (in Holly, duh):

Map of the park
Map of meeting place- you can use this to get directions

Be careful, it is really easy to get lost.  Instructions from I-75N...

1) Take I-75N to exit 101- Grange Hall Road and turn right (east)

2) Take Grange Hall road to McGinnis Road, which is right where Grange Hall turns left.

3) On McGinnis road there will be a sign for Holly Rec- turn right there. If you hit a dirt road, you have gone too far.

4) You enter the park, go past the ranger station, and keep straight.  About 0.6 miles up there is a left turn into the parking lot (it is the first left you can make). The turn has a sign which says "Wilderness Trails and Picnic Shelter".

5) There are 2 parking lots here- fork to the right.

We are meeting at the parking lot with is at #18 on the trail map.

Since this is a state park you will need a recreation passport ($11 when you renew your license). If you do not have one, you can purchase it at the ranger station if there is a ranger there.  If not, they might put a ticket on your car for $11 and then they send you a passport in the mail.

We shall go to River Rock Bar and Grill  which is right outside the park on the southwest corner of Dixie Hwy and Grange Hall (go out the park toward I-75 and make a left at the first light, the bar will be immediately on your right).

You could try here but if that does not help then email me or call[masked]

see you on the trail,

Sometimes I forget to thank Charlie for leading the hike before I head home from a day out in the woods. :( So here it is through cyber-space - THANK you Charlie for leading the hike. It was another good one as usually and good pick of a restaurant. (yeah, I know the choices were slim, still found it.) :)

I have been battling shin splints all week, I thought they would be better by today but apparently you have to rest in order for them to heal. Enjoy the hike, and happy Victory Over The Invading Bunnies Day!

Please note that the hike's time has been changed to 11am. This is because the restaurant closes early (I should have picked a hike near a Chinese restaurant)

Wow! Did we just find Charlie's weakness? Mess with a llama and you mess with Charlie. Good to know. ;)
