NO-SO-FAR-AWAY Car Camping in ALGONAC & Harson's Island BIKE RIDE & FUN STUFF

Time to drag out and test your camping equipment!  I'm planning a multi-things-to-do weekend getaway around Algonac State Park -- about 90 minutes from Ferndale area. If you are a novice, this is a great, and perhaps rare MAC opportunity to camp 10 feet from your car.  Also, there will be at least one large, family tent for those who lack equipment. If you need any gear, including sleeping bags, just leave a post, and I bet someone can help you!

Three planned activities:

-- Volunteering at a Horse Rescue and Rehab farm -- the start time is 3 pm on Saturday.  Others groups have really liked this.  BRING BOOTS, IT IS REALLY, REALLY MUDDY.  IT COULD BE A TOTAL MUDFEST.  This will last until 5 or 6.

RSVP  for that here: http://www.meetup.com/MI-adventurers/events/179725932/

-- Camping at beautiful Algonac State Park, at the Riverfront Campground. Big freighters from all over the world go by -- you can look up their ship numbers to see from where they hail.   This will begin after volunteering at the farm ends... thus, plan on about a 6 pm arrival, or earlier if you're not going to the farm.

We will be camping in LOTS 125, 126, 138, 140, 142, etc....  Chosen to be close enough to the restrooms, and a water spiket, without cutting through other people's campsites.   (I have lot 125 to cut to the bathrooms/showers.  If someone gets 140 or 142, we'll have a water spiket, too.)

Each site holds 6 people and two tents, so I'll be providing a spreadsheet to team up on sites, and also to set up carpools.

Bring your own food, and utensils, but like on other campouts, I assume lots of people will be generous and sharing.

-- Bike riding on Harsens Island at 10:45 Sunday morning.  Please RSVP for that, and get further instructions and maps, separately here:

http://www.meetup.com/MI-adventurers/events/178228472/

On your own:

-- Hiking and biking trails, some are along the river.  http://www.eyeonmichigan.com/trails/bridgetobay/

Some trails connect to this state park, others you might have to drive to.  I'll post more later, or please send me suggestions.

See you there!  -- Lee

I'm sorry about cancelling at last minute. I REALLY wanted to do this event. But I am feeling a little under the weather and decided not to push myself. PLEASE do this one again!

YES, THERE IS ROOM IN THE BIG TENT. Ashok you are confirmed in the big tent, and there is still more room. And, I'll bring a sleep pad. Also, Eleanore, do you have your own site? If not, a smaller tent can go on my site. Please let me know either way.

    Lee,
For people who will not be biking (because they will not be bringing a bike), what alternative activities do you suggest?
    Regards

A woman contacted me about hiking on Harsens Island while everyone else bikes. Would that interest you? There are not trails on the island, but plenty of people take walks along the road. Let me check with her. There are hiking trails connected to the state parks, and those that you can find if you drive a little further north. Right now, there are 7 campers, so I'm not sure how many people would be going with you.

Hello everyone! I'm hoping we get a few more sign ups. We'll have a great time, regardless!

I reserved lot 140 for Friday night and Saturday night. There's room for another tent.

Chris, glad you're coming! This event starts on Saturday May 3 at 3 pm at the horse rescue. We'll get to the campground around 6 or so. I can't camp on Friday night, but see you there!

Is this mainly for adults or is this family/child friendly? Looking for first family camping trip, have twins that are 5 but well behaved.

Family camping is absolutely welcome. We had several last weekend and everyone had a great time! Singles, partners, friends and family... it's all good.

Can we come to individual events... like the horse rescue or bike ride... and not camp?

    1 · April 26, 2014

  • Annalee

This is such a cool idea! Unfortunately, the timing is bad for me. I would do it if it was the right weekend for me. Have fun! Wish I could go...
