Hiking at Highland Recreational Area (8 miles ~ 3.5 hours)

  • July 6, 2014 · 10:30 AM

What is the plan?
Lets hike the gorgeous trails of Highland, connect with nature and enjoy mother nature's handiwork.   We will hike at a moderate pace with some breaks along the way.  Bring plenty of water, bug repellent, some snacks and a sense of adventure.

"The 721 acre Haven Hill Natural Area has all of southern Michigan’s principal forest types within one small area, including tamarack & cedar swamps, beech-maple forest, oak-hickory forest, and mixed hardwood forest.  The area has remained largely undisturbed for the past 90 years and has retained its natural character as well as some unusual flora and fauna."

Where do we meet?
At the parking lot/picnic area on the south east side of Haven Hill Lake (meeting place is circled on the Highland Rec Map- the road is Haven Rd).  It is the first right turn after you pass the ranger station- you cannot see it on google maps unless you turn on the satellite view.

Costs:
This is a state park so you need the Recreation Pass on your license plate.  If you do not have a Pass, the worse that happen is a ranger will put a ticket on your car and you will have to pay the $11 for the pass.

Answers to Common Questions:
Dogs are allowed.
Bring snacks and water.
There is a outhouse at the trailhead and about halfway through the hike.

Afterwards:
A celebratory drink and food at Billy's Tipin Inn
It is exactly 1.1 mile east of the park on M-59/Highland Road.  It is on the left (north) side right when the island separating east and west bound traffic goes away.

address: 6707 Highland Road, White Lake, MI

It was my pleasure darling! It was great hanging out with you. :) Did you see the photo of you and me kneeling down to look at the snapping turtle?

I also had a great time, on the hike and playing cards. Thanks for being such a welcoming group! I enjoyed meeting everyone and hope to see you all again at a future event.

Jessica, I'll ditto Wendy's comment. And thanks for trying to read the card I was laughing too hard to read. FYI: You slipped into a few of the photos that are posted on the site--and added much fun to the day!

Thanks, this was fun. Card game too. Might have been even more fun if there were people sitting anywhere near us.

I'm excited about the hike today! It's a gorgeous one! Just as a reminder: bring water, bug repellent, hat (in case the flies are out and about) and your souls ready for adventure.

The cool MAC members know that you must put aside all other obligations, family commitments, responsibilities, etc. and attend the events. Are you a cool kid or not? :)
