Weekend rustic camping at Brighton Rec

  • September 5, 2014 · 7:00 PM

I am not a big fan of Labor Day Weekend camping because you are camping with everyone and their relatives at least 3 generations removed*.  I figure I might as well work and hold out until the next weekend.  So, for the weekend after Labor Day, I propose a stay at Brighton Rec (in Brighton, of course), which has one of the nicer rustic campgrounds in southeast Michigan and decent hiking.

* slight exaggeration, it is probably closer to 2.5

The Gritty Details
We shall be camping Friday and Saturday night at Appleton Campground, which is a rustic campground by Appleton Lake.  There will be activities on Saturday like hiking and kayaking (rumor says you can rent a kayak there- I am not sure if this is true after Labor Day).  Of course, I will also be bringing a frisbee and cards and, I shall start a rumor that someone will be bringing Cards Against Humanity.

The Costs:
$11 for a Recreational Passport if you don't have one (you can easily pick one up at Brighton Rec) and $12 per campsite per night (so $24).  You can have up to 6 people per site, although there might be a limit of two cars.  Please post your campsite in the discussion section.

You need to reserve a campsite here:
Appleton Campground Reservations... or find someone to share a campsite with

Warnings:
1) Rustic campground means outhouses, water pumps, and no electricity.  It also means more trees and no cement.

2) Appleton Campground is just south of Appleton Lake (here is a map of the park).  However, the road itself is often not in mapping program.  Here is a Satellite Map of Appleton Campground.  You can see the road there even though it is not listed.  Use these maps to get directions

3) The organizer of this event is fond of llamas and muenster cheese and will get cranky if he is denied these for an extended period of time.

Hi folks! Anyone still have extra spaces on their site? It'll be just me & my 1.5-person tent (&car). If not, I'll reserve a site tomorrow.

Hi, There's two of us on 23, and Charlie was looking to share with 2 or 3 people, so there's room for you. You might have to park in the overflow area...not sure if they will enforce the two car limit.

  • Bettina

So, who has only one car and one tent at their site so far and will take my $12 (or whatever half of the true price is) to split the site? I see some folks have offered to share big tents, but I think I'd prefer my own little château this weekend, and I'll have my own vehicle. General rule for most campgrounds is 2 tents & 2 cars, though I haven't specifically read this one's rules.

Hi Bettina- you can share with me! Site 14. I may have a guest but we would just have our two cars. 30 for site with the reservation fee :)

Thanks Theresa! Space sold. I'll message you with my contact info. I'll be there after 8pm on Friday.

I've joined Phil's site, and he can take a few more. I have a Kingdom 6 which holds 4 very comfortably, or at least one person can bring his/her own small tent. Let Phil (click on his name and send a message) know if you'd like to join the site, and for which nights.

      August 30

    • Charlie

If there's rules about number of tents per site I have a 8 person tent that splits into 2 rooms, I will bring it along just incase it's needed on one of the sites.

      August 31

  • Wendy P.

Who's bringing the muenster cheese??? Eek! (Charlie was already given a beautiful stuffed llama to sleep with, so we are covered on that part.) Just need the cheese!!!

    August 25

    • Charlie

      Block or sliced munenster?

The campground has been changed to Appleton. Apparently everyone was wrong about the the original campground when I called. Thank you, Charity for triple checking that. You can make the reservations now. See you in two weeks.
