Night of Candlelit XC Skiing 2013

UPDATE: Port Cresent is grooming the trails and there is a lovely amount of snow, however they will not be setting up the candlelit trail this year because of lack of time and manpower to make it happen.

New Plan! Since the Candlelit Trail night was canceled by Port Cresent, we are planning on hitting the freshly groomed trails early. Let's meet at 3pm at the Port Cresent Day Use area. I will also be leading a hike on Sunday at Sleeper State Park (likely around noon for those interested)

Every year Port Crescent State Park hosts an evening of skiing on a 3 mile long candlelit trail! The evening begins at dusk when the trail candles are lit for those with skis in what the Midwest calls Lantern or Candlelight Skiing. You need to own your skis or bring your rented skis to attend, because they do not have rentals there.

Feel free to bring snowshoes & sleds for other area fun. They may also bring back the Horse Sleigh for rides this year for $1 /per person/per ride. Complete with sleigh bells :)

CANDLELIT SKI EVENT: Sunset is about 6pm on Saturday, so we will plan to meet about 5pm for hot cocoa & bonfire pre-skiing.

AFTER PARTY/GROUP CAMPFIRE: There is usually an after party & bonfire at one of the cabins that will be rented by attendees (most likely at Sleeper State Park) $3 firewood chip-in from all who attend the party (potluck welcome & encouraged)

For those still planning on renting skis Hines Hardware is renting them for about $25 for the entire weekend.  It's located right near the park. (989)[masked] ...call ahead though!!! - Or you can get them at varies REI & Sports Centers.

If you're ready to buy, but don't want to shell out the clams, there's used xc skis at Play it Again Sports in Clawson, MI that run $50 for NEW boots + $30-40 used skis & polls = $80+ approx.

OVERNIGHTS THOUGHTS: This doesn't have to be an over night trip, but since it's a good ride up there.... There are cabins available at Port Crescent & 6 miles away at Sleeper State Park if you want to make a great weekend out of it (i'm staying in a rustic in Port Crescent with 4 others). Here's a few links for the options... Port Crescent Cabin (5 of us are staying here) :

Hey all, we're planning to join in as well! Are we still going to do a bonfire afterwards? And what will be the easiest way to find you all once we get there? Thanks!

I've never actually been to one of these yet, so I'm looking forward to meeting all of you! Please let me know if there is anything additional I should bring!

Huh. That's strange. I actually changed my RSVP to a no, and it reposted my original comment. But with the time change and lack of candlelight we're bowing out, but hope to meet you all sometime soon! Thanks again for organizing this Rebecca.

Does anyone know what time the event ends?

As of now, there is no event time. The candlelit portion was canceled by Port Cresent State Park

Ashok, the new plan is to meet around 3pm at the day use area, but feel free to come earlier :)

Thanks so much for all your planning and organizing. We'll be pulling out of the event since the candlelight was a big motivator.. have fun on the trails!!!

I was planning on going up 75 to Bay City. Figured with the new snow the back way would be slower.

UPDATE: Port Cresent is grooming the trails and there is a lovely amount of snow, however they will not be setting up the candlelit trail this year because of lack of time and manpower to make it happen. They apologize and ensure there will be excellent xc ski conditions otherwise.

We will come still if there is candlelight. I tried calling just now but the machine message said the event is cancelled. Even still, holding out hope with you. Will call again in morning, and if the status hasn't changed, we will not be joining. Was really looking forward to this! :( Hopefully, next time!

    February 8, 2013

    • Rebecca!

Yes, they cancelled based on not enough snow two days ago, but they are discussing things. I will keep updating

      Rebecca,

Even if the park isn't able to live up to its commitment, you've done a great job organizing this event. Your enthusiasm shows. Kudos to you!

So, here's the deal! I got the full scoop... apparently they lent there snow mobile to another park services department over a year ago and still haven't gotten it back - it was promised by the event, but as of yesterday they were still waiting. As of last night, there was enough snow forecasted, however they feel like it might be too much work for their park to pull it together by Saturday night (assuming they even get the snow blower). The response I got made me feel like they might just need to hear from some interested parties.

It can't hurt for you all to call today and show interest and maybe ask if you can check back in the morning too. [masked] ...I feel like if they realize how many were coming, they might still try and hustle to make it happen.

Again, I will be enjoying the area either way :)

Sorry that the park has not yet kept their event schedule for us.

Bummer! I will not be attending this event. Was looking forward to the new snow and candles...

Do they hold this event more than once a winter? Maybe I can make the next one...

    February 7, 2013

    • Rebecca!

Here it's usually just once. The snow will be great still, they just don't feel like they have time to set things up. I am still waiting to hear by tomorrow though

      February 7, 2013

  • Rebecca!

Sad news everyone, they are getting more snow, but are deciding not to take the time to place the candles out. They do expect to groom the trails though... I will likely still be heading up for camping, bonfires, xc skiing and more, but totally understand anyone who needs to back out. What a bummer! Anyone else missing Michigan Winters?!

PortCrescentSP unfortunately we have to cancel our Candlelight Ski Night planned for Saturday. No snow, but you can still enjoy the trails without snow!

I am from Fenton. I am looking for some people to carpool with to Port Austin on Saturday. I am fairly versatile as to where the carpool can meet. Whether it is somewhere on I-96, I-75 or I-69.

Hi everyone! Snow conditions are looking great and the weekend should be amazing! Be sure to rent or reserve your skis in advance. NO SNOWSHOES OR HIKING is allowed during the actual event, but these activities are welcome and encouraged any other times. Is everyone all set with their plans?

Hi guys! This seems like an awesome event! I have never been cross country skiing before but this seems so cool! Do you think that this event is something a beginner can do or would you recommend waiting off for another event?

    February 1, 2013

    • Rebecca!

      Yes, it's a nice shorter trail :)

      February 1, 2013

I'm so excited for this! It sounds amazing, but I have never XC skied before. Is that okay? I have other questions regarding the event.. who can I ask?
