UPDATE: Port Cresent is grooming the trails and there is a lovely amount of snow, however they will not be setting up the candlelit trail this year because of lack of time and manpower to make it happen.
New Plan! Since the Candlelit Trail night was canceled by Port Cresent, we are planning on hitting the freshly groomed trails early. Let's meet at 3pm at the Port Cresent Day Use area. I will also be leading a hike on Sunday at Sleeper State Park (likely around noon for those interested)
Every year Port Crescent State Park hosts an evening of skiing on a 3 mile long candlelit trail! The evening begins at dusk when the trail candles are lit for those with skis in what the Midwest calls Lantern or Candlelight Skiing. You need to own your skis or bring your rented skis to attend, because they do not have rentals there.
Feel free to bring snowshoes & sleds for other area fun. They may also bring back the Horse Sleigh for rides this year for $1 /per person/per ride. Complete with sleigh bells :)
CANDLELIT SKI EVENT: Sunset is about 6pm on Saturday, so we will plan to meet about 5pm for hot cocoa & bonfire pre-skiing.
AFTER PARTY/GROUP CAMPFIRE: There is usually an after party & bonfire at one of the cabins that will be rented by attendees (most likely at Sleeper State Park) $3 firewood chip-in from all who attend the party (potluck welcome & encouraged)
For those still planning on renting skis Hines Hardware is renting them for about $25 for the entire weekend. It's located right near the park. (989)[masked] ...call ahead though!!! - Or you can get them at varies REI & Sports Centers.
If you're ready to buy, but don't want to shell out the clams, there's used xc skis at Play it Again Sports in Clawson, MI that run $50 for NEW boots + $30-40 used skis & polls = $80+ approx.
OVERNIGHTS THOUGHTS: This doesn't have to be an over night trip, but since it's a good ride up there.... There are cabins available at Port Crescent & 6 miles away at Sleeper State Park if you want to make a great weekend out of it (i'm staying in a rustic in Port Crescent with 4 others). Here's a few links for the options... Port Crescent Cabin (5 of us are staying here) :
