    Part 1: Back Country Basics

    Part 2: Bush Craft

    Part 3: Foraging Day

    Part 4: Last Stand

    Where to meet:

Island Lake State Recreation Area – Spring Mill Pond Parking Lot.

Take I-96 to the Kensington Road Exit. Head South across Grand River. The park entrance will be on your left. You will need a Recreation Passport for entry. Otherwise you may purchase a day pass at the gate.

Once past the gate, turn right. Continue down the park road past the rail road bridge. The Spring Mill Pond parking lot will be the second (2nd) lot on your left. We are NOT meeting at the Trail Head Parking Lot.

    What to bring:

Wear boots instead of shoes if possible. No sandals, high heels, or platform shoes allowed for your own safety. Wear appropriate layered clothing for the weather. Bring water and something to snack on. If possible, bring a digital copy of the course text book:

    Part 2: Bush Craft

-Prerequisites:You must have attended Part 1 of the Lamboradi Survival Course to attend.

-Objectives:Learn to craft various tools both from natural materials and from basic items in your pack. This is a solo event. No teams necessary.

-Topics to be covered: Hasty arrows, hasty shelter, fire hardening, pine pitch glue, Dell bow, bola, figure-4 dead fall trap, basic snare, ESEE snare, back packer’s oven, primitive bow, torch, spear, & digging stick.

-What we will do: We will hike south of Spring Mill Pond and set up a day camp. We will construct as many of the above tools listed above depending on the weather and everyone’s endurance limit.

    Part 3: Foraging Day

-Prerequisites:You must have attended parts 1 and 2 of the Lamboradi Survival Course to attend. A valid fishing license (either restricted or all species) is required to attend. You can purchase a fishing license as long as you have a valid Michigan ID or driver's license from most Meijer, Walmart, Dunhams, or Dick's sporting goods stores. A restricted license (good enough for what we're doing @ this event) is $15.00 not including tax or you can get an all species license for $28 not including tax.

-Objectives: Learn to fish, make fire, and prepare wild edibles including gutting and/or cleaning fish.

This is a team based event with 4 teams of up to 4 people.

-Topics to be covered: Using a flint striker, using a bow drill, using a hand drill, how to fish, how to clean/gut fish.

-What we will do: We will head east of Spring Mill Pond and set up a day camp. Once at the day camp, teams will create a ‘salad’ of wild edibles, build a fire using any variety of primitive methods, and attempt to catch, clean, and cook fish.

-Charge: This event costs $5 to attend. This covers the cost of consumable materials used throughout the course.

Another reminder. Make sure you have a VALID fishing license. Penalties for fishing without a license start ~ $100.

Now it's both. I'll update the description later today. Sorry for the confusion.

Is this part 2 or part 3? the Title says both and then it says you must have taken part 2..

These events are rarely ever full. There is usually a 30% no-show rate and in cold weather an additional 20% no show rate on top of that. If anyone on the wait list would like to attend, go ahead and do so because there will be room.
The RSVP limit is an attempt to keep the group size under control & enjoyable for all.

I attended parts 1 & 2 last fall so I RSVPed to attend part 3. My husband attended part 1 last fall but we didn't RSVP for him to attend this event because you said he had to have done part 2.... NOW you open it up to those who haven't attended part 2... now that the registrations are all full. :(

Is this part 2 or 3? The title and parts of the description say part 3, but the first sentence of the description says, "this is part 2"?

    • Chris F.

Good catch. The course was shuffled around & reconfigured today. Foraging day is part 3.
