Tough Mudder!

***Note: This event is NOT full, people are on the waiting list because they haven't officially registered yet.

Well, I unexpectedly agreed to do Tough Mudder... thanks David :-/

Would you like to crawl through muddy tunnels and scale 12-foot walls? I'm not sure why this is a good idea, but there's only one way to find out. Here is some general info:

http://toughmudder.com/

I'd like find help to prepare in the months leading up to this, and recruit a team. If you are good-to-go, that's fine. It will take much training before I'm fit enough. I need to work on upper-body strength, endurance, wall-climbing skills, etc... If you have any ideas about how to practice, send them our way.

This obstacle course is designed to be a challenge, not a race. The motto is 'no mudder left behind'. I read that the average percentage of participants who finish a Tough Mudder challenge is 78%. Our goal is 100%!

There will be an event in the Detroit area on June 29th and 30th, 2013. I've been informed that Sunday is a LOT muddier and tougher to run. Naturally I don't want to run the less-tough/less-muddy version of this event, so I signed up for Sunday morning.

Accepting the Tough Mudder pact:

Please add yourself to the waiting list if you're interested in participating. I'll put you on here after you sign up through the Tough Mudder site. We each get a $15 team discount (refunded later) if 21 people sign up.

This event is cross-posted from here: http://www.meetup.com/a2adventurers/events/86261822/

We have weekly training events in Ann Arbor, and hope to have events further east in the near future.

So I feel fine, but I wanted to check. Apparently there is a rash of TM participants on both Sat and Sun complaining of flu like or food poisoning type symptoms. To the point of hospitalization. If you feel like this you need to contact the county health department. I've seen 100+ comments on TM Facebook regarding trying to pinpoint the cause. Thanks!

I've been sick since Sunday evening, and threw up on Monday. I've had nausea, diarrhea, aches, and extreme tiredness. I'm starting to feel better. This is the third time I've done a Tough Mudder and also the third time I've gotten sick from a Tough Mudder!

Good job everyone. Special thanks to Eric Hammond for leading group 2, and for boosting so many over the walls! Pictures to follow...

FYI, our start time is 9:40 am. I'm told it can be pretty hectic and you should arrive 1.5 hours early. Allowing time to park, get signed in and round up the team, I plan to leave from Tecumseh at 7:40 am.

If you're going directly to MIS, don't bother trying to comment here if you get lost:
"Meetup will be down for maintenance Sunday June 30th from 6:00 - 9:30 AM EST."

FYI: Spectator tickets are $40 (cash-only) onsite, but only $20 online until Friday at noon.

I'd like help in preparing also. Do we have a group willing to train together?

    June 9, 2013

    • Dylan C.

Millicent, we've been doing trail running in Ann Arbor every Sunday but not much in your area. I might try to make a couple of these:

Millicent, you are welcome to join me for a run this weekend. I'll be running both days. I live in berkley. Let me know.

I have officially signed up to be a volunteer from 12 - 6 pm on Sunday; that was Dylan's suggestion. We'll see if they need me...

"Tiffany worked really hard and made us a super kick ass shirt. Let's be a team."

I already ordered a shirt from Eric...would be a better team deal if we all had the same one. Doesn't really make sense to me to have one team with multiple shirt designs. Eric had a design ready weeks ago...he gets my support. In any case, I'm looking forward to the event. See you guys there!

I am registered for Sun @ 10. I can't join your team without being charged a fee.

I uploaded a design to the photos page. Thoughts? Did anyone want a different name?

      May 17, 2013

    • Dylan C.

      It's good... here's a link: http://photos1.meetup...

Hmm, it would be nice if it also said Tough Mudder 2013. I do like Eric's idea of just having the name of the club on one side, and the clubs standard logo and name of the event on the other. Personally, I would skip the one-time-use team name and just promote the club name.

For anyone who didn't see it, here's the shirt we're having printed for the Ann Arbor Adventure Club side:

Another shirt that was recently printed for AAAC:

Don, do you know where to get the official Michigan Adventures Club logo in computer clip art form?

  • Jonathan

Tiffany, they don't check on site whether you belong in that wave or not. You can pretty much run whenever and whoever you want. The only thing is you aren't officially part of that team, which is usually for fundraising purposes. Just start with everyone else, especially since this is an untimed event.

    May 8, 2013

  • Dylan C.

FYI, Eric Hammond designed custom red synthetic shirts to help us find each other when everyone is covered in mud. If you want one, please pay before June 2nd. Ordering info is on the fb group: http://www.facebook.com/groups/...

So I ran this last year and just a thought about teams. You are better off having the actual running teams break up into teams of 5-7 instead of having a large group of 30 running together. Teams often lose each other at the obstacles and you don't want one person wondering around on their own after losing a team. Your best bet is to all start in the same wave but have sub teams run together.
