This is a great area to hike in the winter - there's no gate fee from October - March; and, very few campers and boaters during this time as well. The driving directions that I have for this area are:
- From Apex (or points east) take US-64 west towards Jordan Lake. At the Wilsonville stoplight, turn left (south) onto Beaver Creek Road (note - this road is Farrington Point going right (north) ... there's a gas station on the northwest corner). After crossing the lake, turn right on Pea Ridge Road. New Hope Overlook will be on the right, approximately 2.2 miles ahead (you take a hair-pin turn to the right onto W.H. Jones Rd. that leads to the entrance)
- After entering the park, take the first road to the right, that leads to a parking lot; the trailhead is on the left (there are restrooms as well).
I have hiked this trail only twice, but it has the feel of rural - and I'm hoping that since it's off season (and before the trees leaf out) that there will actually be vistas of the lake for about half of the walk. We'll be walking the Blue Trail that connects up with the Red Trail in a counter-clockwise direction - the total distance is about 5.5 miles; and the terrain is considered moderate. There is an overlook on the final section of the trail that we'll stop at; and, possibly other overlooks/vistas along the way, but since I've only been on this trail during the summertime, I've only had the "micro" view.
Please plan on about 2.5 to 3 hours for the entire walk, and journaling at the end. Sorry, no pictures for this walk :( to post today. Here's a link to a map for this area:
