Meditation Walk @ Apex Community Park (Lake Pine Drive entrance)

DATE CHANGE!!!  THE NEW DATE FOR THIS WALK IS AUGUST 17th (rather than the 10th)!!!

We haven't walked at this park in a while - when I went by this week, the construction appears to be finishing up and the lake level is back to normal.  This is a shorter walk which will fit well with the heat of August.  Please be sure that you're at the Lake Pine Drive entrance to this park --- which is NOT the main entrance.  This walk starts at 9:30AM!

We'll be walking the paved greenway that skirts around the lake - starting out counter-clockwise.  We'll also shift onto three trail spikes that shift us off of the pavement and onto dirt trails; and shift us into a closer connection with trees and awareness of our steps and stride.

We'll start out with :10 standing/sitting meditation on the grassy dam overlooking the lake; set out on the paved greenway using the painted animal trail markings to bring us back into the here-now with body scans (more about that when we meet); stop for another :10 standing/sitting meditation on the 3rd dirt trail (where the land juts out into the lake - where wind, lake sparkles and sometimes wildlife are amplified); then finish out the walk in silence since this is a short walk.  When we return to the parking area, those wanting time to stay in silence/journal can return to the grassy dam or a nearby benches; those wanting to connect with others can gather near the two picnic tables.

Plan on about 1.5 hours for the walk; I'm guess that the total distance is around 2.5 miles.  This is a fairly flat walk (an uphill at the start; a downhill at the end) with relatively smooth paved and dirt surfaces.

Here's a map of the park: Apex Community Park

A wonderful day for a walk in the park! I am so glad that we shifted this out one week. I enjoyed both the walk and the post-walk conversations.

    Hi Leslie,

This week-end is turning out to be very busy for me. I went for a hike in the morning and mushroom picking in the afternoon and had an overwhelming day overall, I think I need to rest tomorrow. I will practice on my own and will join next time! Have a wonderful walk!

I may not be able to attend in the morning. I do TNR with Operation Catnip and tomorrow is the clinic, and I am helping someone with some traps. if we are successful, I will need to be transport in the morning. So sorry--I was really looking forward to going and meeting like-minded people

Hi Myra - Operation Catnip sounds like a great adventure as well. I have changed your RSVP to "not attending" ... in the future please be sure to change your RSVP when your plans change. Hope to see you on a future walk.

    Hi All,
I have decided to go to a retreat in the mountains this weekend so I will miss the hike. I'm sorry as I was looking forward to it. Enjoy. Maybe next time.

I walked Lake Pine today and signs are posted saying the trail will be closed starting Monday, 11 - Aug for work on the trail. I'm not sure when it will reopen.

I just talked with the park office, and we'll still be able to walk on Sunday. Due to the repaving work, it may be an out-and-back to the right, then an out-and-back to the left to go around where they'll be working (if they've started by then). And, most/all of the side trails will still be accessible.

I walked the trails this afternoon, and we'll walk these trails as originally planned ... there will be 25' of bush-wacking to get past a temporary construction fence, but very doable.

I just shifted this walk out to the following week - you all should have received emails. Hopefully the new date will work for all of you - but if not please change your RSVP to not attending. And, if the original date of the 10th didn't work for you, perhaps the 17th (also at 9:30AM) will be a go.

Would anyone be interested in carpooling? I live around Southpoint, right off I-40.

Hi Leslie, I am looking forward to the hike. As I am relatively new to the area and don't know Cary at all, I looked up the park, but can't specifically find how to get to the Lake Pine Dr. entrance. I found this address for the park online where someone described a trail like the one you have picked. Please let me know if it's correct or if you can give me a better address for my GPS:
    Apex Community Park
2200 Laura Duncan Rd between Laura Duncan Rd & Lake Pine Dr.

    Thank you!

Be careful ... the address you've listed is for the main entrance to the park (not the Lake Pine Dr. entrance). The map link above doesn't point to the right section of Lake Pine Drive (but my instructions that it's on Lake Pine Dr. between US Hwy 64 West and Cary Pkwy is correct). Here's an address for one of the lots on a street just across from the Lake Pine Dr. entrance ... this should get you close and you'll see the park and entrance when you get near. Key in 408 Versailles Drive, Cary, NC ... that will get you within striking/walking distance.

Would love to do this one but flying back from a holiday in Maine on that day. I'm interested in Cary greenways, learning them more.

This happens to be an Apex greenway (on the edge of Cary) ... but Cary has it's own collection of greenways as well (you can pick up a map at the Town of Cary government campus). Safe travels.

Yes, a great park ... and many folks haven't veered off onto the unpaved spurs (it makes the walk so very different). I hope to see you in September!

Unable to participate but hoping I will be able to attend next month.

Hope you'll be able to make it to one of our hikes in the near future.
