Metaphysical Libertarianism

One more time we plan on straying into the domain of free will. This time we will examine the ideas of a supporter of free will (aka metaphysical libertarianism). Robert Kane is probably the closest leading contemporary philosopher for that position, though some argue that he is not a true metaphysical libertarian. He has written an article, “Reflections on Free Will, Determinism, and Indeterminism”, for the Determinism and Freedom Philosophy Website, which we will be discussing at our next meeting. I am told that “Who's Afraid of Determinism?,” by Christopher Taylor and Daniel Dennett contains a response to Kane's arguments, for those who are interested. We will again try separating into groups if more than about eight or nine people show up. If that occurs, I will be interested in your evaluation of how well you think it works. Provided, of course, that your opinions are not coerced.

With eight attendees, we did not split into groups this time, but this does not preclude our trying it again if we have a lot of people show up. I thought the discussion was particularly probing this time.

Curran's has been pretty good to us over the years. I think it is good if you can order a meal there.

Do people usually eat before arriving?

Sean, some order food there. Do as you will. I myself buy a beverage for the night.
