Kelley Hagenbuch, D.C., M.H. is a practicing herbalist in St. Croix Falls, and a mushroom enthusiast. I am still a book learner and love getting the books out when I find unfamiliar mushrooms. Wouldn't this be fun to do in a group? lets forage together after rainfalls to practice identifying mushrooms.
Contact me at www.doctorweedmaster.com if you would like to join my mushroom list. Be ready to forage during or after rain. Beginning in May, foraging groups will meet at my house and then drive to different promising areas up to twice a week on Thursday evenings at 5:30 or Saturdays at 1:30. Always contact me to make sure we are going! I will be happy to guide/mentor you for $5.00/person per session, or you can just work on your own. Never eat any mushrooms you find until you are an expert identifier!

Last late morels are on north-facing slopes in cooler, deep shade. GL!

We will be going to Interstate Park on the Wisconsin side tonight at 5:30pm. Meet at Gaylord Nelson Park (behind the address listed). There are many more mushrooms out there besides Morels!!

Yep--birch are starting to flush with oysters, the fruitiest and best-tasting of the season, IMHO. Enjoy, there will be a lot of them after all of this rain! Check out the William O'Brian education center for a great display.

So tomorrow the 29th at 5:30 pm there's a hunt?

      May 28

    • Kelley H.

Yes, indeed! We may go to where there are known morels growing but are claimed by the landowner, or to an area where we take our chances...but get to keep what we find. Your choice!

Warm, sunny areas are sprouting morels but not yet areas in the deeper shade here in the heart of the cities...if you can beat the lawn mowers to them, that is!

Mushroom group meets again tonight. We will hunt again for morels (not a thing last time) in a different area. There is a nice example of one growing nearby if you have never spied one in the wild...

Sorry, but college finals are demanding my attention tonight. Joan and I will meet up with you some other time. :)

Hi, do you know if the morel mushrooms are starting yet? Thanks.

    May 14

    • Kelley H.

Nope, Morel season is not here yet. Look for the Lilac blooms!

I take it back. Reports are coming in that they are beginning to pop up! So much for my reliable lilac lore! We will be checking out a possible site...

Everyone is welcome to come tomorrow. With this late spring there are just a few mushrooms starting but not many. We will be doing a spring ephemeral identification walk as well. Rain or shine!

Mushroom group is beginning in May again in St. Croix Falls, but it sounds like Adam would like to host a group in Minneapolis. Adam, could you put your address under your comments?

I would like to host this event. We could switch the focus to medicinal, winter mushrooms. I have lots of dried samples and plenty of seating. (location: White Bear Lake).
Whatever time works for the majority, works for me.

Hi Heather, unfortunately mushroom hunting is over for the season, but lets get together next spring!

Let's just switch the focus to winter mushrooms (medicinal conks) and have it at my place!

If you were looking for medicinal mushrooms, some are still out there hiding under grasses and covered with snow. Shelf mushrooms are pretty tough and are the last we've found in Fall. Birch/tamarack swamps will have Red Belted Polypores (tastes fabulous!), chaga, and Horse Hoofs all for tea. If there is a brief warmup (over freezing), look for those Velvet Foot shrooms (double check each stem for brown velvet, though!). Darn, now I have a craving for chaga but can't have it (still BF).

Fomitopsis pinicola, Horse Hoofs are Fomes fomentarius, Velvet Foot is Flammulina velutipes, and you may like Tramates versicolor for a tasty tea. 4) There are hundreds, if not thousands, of medicinal mushrooms. So, you will need to look at what purpose your medicine needs to fill and invest some time researching specific mushrooms. All the names I use are very common and are available in mushroom guides such as the National Audubon Society's Field Guide to North American Mushrooms. Good luck in your hunts!

I have dried samples of quite a few of these mushrooms.

I hope you come up with a time and place. Sounds great!

One big thing I've learned mushroom hunting is that you cannot predict when they will come out, but mostly it is after a rain. You also cannot predict the date of the rain....

I hope this meetup is in the Twin Cities area.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
