Charles Dickens' famous story adapted into Klingonese, with English supertitles and narrative analysis from The Vulcan Institute of Cultural Anthropology. Presented by Mixed Blood.

Full details available at the theatre's website: www.mixedblood.com/mainstage/a-klingon-christmas-carol.

You must buy your own ticket; I selected this performance because it offers the opportunity to get a discount on your ticket in exchange for donating canned goods. I think these are intended for human food banks, so they probably do not want Klingonese viands, however.

The show starts at 8:00; we will assemble in front of the building at 7:30 to establish a defense perimeter within the auditorium. Don't be late!

Blood wine and other corrosive liquids are probably not allowed in the theatre, so if you bring them, we suggest using innocuous containers.

Once again we'll be meeting at Davanni's Pizza at I-94 and White Bear Ave. There are two party rooms in the back and we set up in there. (We are the intelligent-looking bunch!)

Our topic of discussion will be Creating Cultural Frameworks. How does your "world" work? What are the norms and beliefs that guide and/or restrict your protagonist? How much of this background is necessary to keep your world engaging to the reader?

After the discussion, we will do critiques of the items submitted. We are kindhearted and helpful with your work so do not fear! If you have something you'd like to submit, click on Files in the drop-down box and follow the instructions. Be sure to preface your submission with .

To critique other's submissions for the meeting, print out a copy and make notes on it for the writer. We're looking for a variety of impressions, so don't worry about doing it "right". We need to know what the reader thinks--and that's whoever is reading it. By critiquing the work of others, we become better writers.

As always, submissions must be added to Files at least seven days prior to the meetup (Dec. 1st).
The word count must be less than 10,000 words.
There can be no more that 3 submissions per month.

Hope to see you there!

Ms. Bujold will read aloud for the entertainment of whoever shows up. We were not told what she will read, but it should be noted that she has recently delivered a new novel about Miles Vorkosigan to her publishers, so it might be from that or from whatever her new project is.

Lois' website: www.dendarii.com

A dinner outing for those interested generally occurs following these readings. Lois will, of course, be invited; whether she will attend is not known.

Retrofits is NOT an official workshop of the MinnSpec writer's network, but we do post notices of our meetings here so that prospective members can find us.

The Retrofits writer's group has been in existence for about seven years. Retrofits used to be associated with MISFITS, but is currently independent.

Here's how Retrofits works: any member may ask to have the rest of the group critique his/her work. The piece to be critiqued is to be forwarded to the facilitator at least one week in advance of the meeting (Though we are currently considering the possibility of posting stories here in the files section soon). We do a round robin style critique with members commenting verbally on the major things that they like and dislike about the work. Members often give the person being critiqued a written copy of the story with minor suggestions also.

Perspective members are welcome to sit in for a meeting or two. We are primarily oriented towards speculative fiction, but have also covered other types of writing for members.

Questions about Retrofits can be directed to Ricky Foos, who is MinnSpec's official liaison with the Retrofits writing group.

You can drop Ricky an e-mail via this link:

Join us in the community room at the Uptown Lunds for reading, eating, and greeting with your fellow speculative fiction writers. New or inactive members, this is a great opportunity to connect or reconnect. If you've had a sale or publication, bring your happy news - - if you've had a crushing rejection, let us commiserate. Please indicate in your RSVP if you are planning to read.

If you haven't attended a Meetup at this location before, here's the scoop: Lunds in Uptown has a community room upstairs that is quiet, free and has great bus access. Even better yet, it has a fabulous deli but is not a restaurant. So we can brown bag our own lunches or buy a lunch there. The deli selection includes salads, sandwiches, soups and sushi. If you are going to be getting your food from Lunds, please arrive fifteen minutes early to pick out your food before the meeting.

Gang! I have made arrangements for Philip Grace, an expert on medieval history (and avid fantasy reader) to come talk with us about day-to-day life in the medieval period.

Philip's: Bio:
Philip Grace is a doctoral student in medieval cultural/social history, which means he spends his days writing and teaching about every part of medieval life *except* swords, including the medieval church (from theology to daily practice); food, clothing, buildings, and artisan trades; travelers and trade routes; education; and family structures.

In his spare time, he likes to read about swords. In the interests of being well-rounded, he also reads a little bit of SF, mystery, and steampunk. His other hobby is talking incessantly. He lives with his wife, their cat, and a baby arriving around Christmas.
