Multi-Pitch Rock Climb Gunks 5.6+

  • August 31, 2012 · 8:00 AM

This MeetUp is for experienced climbers who have successfully followed at least 5.6+ climbs and are interested in multi-pitch climbs versus top roping. Must have own shoes, harness, chalk bag (if desired) and a helmet is recommended as well. I am going to limit this to a max of 5-6 climbers so we can have perhaps 2 groups climbing at the same time with a max of 3 people on a rope. Seeking those with extra ropes to bring as well.

Fun day climbing at Peterskill, just the 3 of us, no crowds in sight! Basically a 1/10th scale model of the Near Trapps/Trapps. Good place to get your feet wet if you haven't climbed down there before and have no plans to climb multipitch. Routes range from easy to 5.12+ with great rock and good gear.

Hey gang, due to a schedule change I may not be able to attend. I won't know for sure until Friday.

paul, i am still in for friday....7am at Fire Road park and ride. seeing as how we are 5 and only 1 leader, i will bring a rope and top rope anchor gear. i wouldn't mind doing some mock leads if anyone has the patience to deal with it. however, i don't want my rack laying around if i won't be using it.

Sora had a Saturday trip up, but it looks like it's been removed or morphed into this.

Justin, when I spoke with Mike on Friday he was still interested, I think. I am happy to lead a party of three. If Mike cannot go, is there anyone else able/willing to lead?

    August 27

    • Justin

In theory I can lead, in reality I'd like to follow a few days before leading anything. I did my first lead in 5 years a few weeks ago. Not too much drama, but I haven't climbed a lot in that span so my vertical decision making is still not quite lead ready.

I can't make it to this one, but am up for weekday climbing in the Gunks whenever anyone else can. I have a rope and rack and lead trad up to 7, so let me know if there is more interest in weekday climbing! Thanks!

Vanessa, I'm usually up for Fridays in either the Southern ADK or Gunks. However, I'm not sure about the next month as my schedule is tight for a while...a good thing, tight with trips, not work!

YEs I can be at the park&ride 7 am ? and return by 6. sounds good.

      August 24

    • Justin

Sounds good. I will shoot you a text next week to confirm. I am having a wisdom tooth out Monday, and it's messing with my work week, so there is a slim chance I might bail. But I'd say I am 95% in on this outing.

Justin, I prefer to lead on a single line, unless the route dictates otherwise. I will plan on bringing two 60m ropes and we can sort the rope situation out when we get there.

    • Justin

Scott, not a problem, some people hate doubles. For me it all depends on the route. in the gunks a lot of routes traverse, so doubles are a big benefit, plus with roofs the rope drag is lessened. The downside is that a rats nest can form pretty easily if you aren't used to them. When I climb in groups of 3, I almost always opt for doubles in place of a trail line.

  • Michael Urban

Opps! Sorry Justin! I just fixed that! It's 8 AM! Sorry about that!

    August 23

    • Justin

Do you have doubles? And better question, can you lead on doubles? I will bring doubles if anyone can lead on them, if not I will bring a 50m 10.5mm single. My experience in the Gunks is most belays work fine on 50m ropes, rappel gets more interesting but usually isn't an issue.

Definitely in now. If anyone also wants to climb in the Adirondacks over the weekend I am headed up either Friday night or Sat morning for the weekend. Will probably 1-2 days, definitely need a long hike with a heavy pack as well.

    August 23

    • Justin

Should say will climb 1-2 days

      August 23

  • Justin

Mike, is this 8am or 8pm? I'm all for night climbing, but I kinda need to be home by 6pm!

If it is 8am, I'm probably in. Glad to follow some classic 6's.
