Part III Ishmael-Isaac Program: Serving the Needy for Thanksgiving

MPV JOINS TBH IN SERVING THE THANKSGIVING FEAST 

(Note: this is a MORNING program, and in the Temple parking lot. Park on the streets).

This annual event is a big one and there's usually a lot of media coverage. Last year we served more than three hundred people. Please where orange or red t-shirts or our MPV T-shirt and if you don't have one please purchase one or we'll loan one to you. Represent!

Below is the comprehensive organizing communique:

THANKSGIVING 2013 GUIDE TO VOLUNTEERS
Thank you for your interest in volunteering for the Temple Beth Hillel Thanksgiving Dinner Project currently and in the past. We are providing information to you to make this a more worthwhile and pleasurable experience. We also have set forth below the shifts and the volunteers signed up for those shifts.
As was the case in years past, we will have no idea how many guests we will be serving until they actually arrive on Thanksgiving Day. Last year we served more than three hundred people. This year we may also deliver meals off site. We have many, many volunteers eager and willing to help, and we may not have immediate work for all of you. We ask for your patience as we adjust to the tasks we have to perform as they arise. Keep a positive attitude and this will be a pleasant and meaningful experience.
Those of you who will be driving to the Temple , please note the following. The Temple parking lot will not be available. We ask that you do not park on Laurel Grove south of Riverside , so that we will have room for any guests or guest transportation vehicles to park. Plenty of parking is available in the neighborhood north of Riverside and Laurel Grove.
This year we are again asking the volunteers to check in at the Volunteers Desk near the entrance to the front lobby just off the parking lot. If you have a Volunteer T-shirt from years past, please wear it. Otherwise, please wear an orange or red shirt so that we can readily identify you as a volunteer. At that time we will assign you to one of the following tasks:
1. Volunteer check-in and assignment2. Guest check-in3. Tally where guests are from (E.g., Interfaith Food Pantry, East Valley Senior Center etc.)4. Food servers5. Providing directions to guests (Corner of Riverside and Laurel Grove)6. Guest hosts (seating and serving the guests)7. Runners between the kitchen and the serving areas8. Food packers for off-site meal delivery, if necessary9. Drivers to deliver meals off site, if necessary. (Other tasks may be added as needed)10 Kitchen clean up crew–starting at 1pm.
Please contact me as to your preference. We will make every effort to assign you as requested. Please understand that we will not be able to accommodate everyone''s request. We need you to be as accommodating as possible. Keep loose, and that will add to your overall experience. If you work a later shift, we would greatly appreciate it if you could help with cleaning the kitchen after all the meals have been prepared and served. In years past, many of the event organizers have to remain a long time after the event to clean the kitchen. If we can assemble a crew of six to eight volunteers we will be able to complete that task much more quickly.
Those who are serving food and who are the Guest Hosts please take note of the following procedures. The Guest Hosts will be serving food to the guests. The guests are not to go to the food line. Only individuals who are wearing the Volunteer T-shirts or similarly colored shirts will be served by the food servers. Those who are food servers are not to serve food to anyone other than volunteers.
Due to demand, we can serve only one meal per guest. Containers are available for food that is not eaten, but we will not be using containers for the guest to take home additional meals or food. (We are making exceptions for those guests from "Grandparents as Parents" who have been specifically identified and provided for taking home multiple meals.)
Each guest will be entitled to a gift bag and food that is distributed at the gift bag location. If necessary, we will try to have bags identified specifically for men, women or children.
Supervisors will be available to answer your questions or resolve any problems that may arise. We will announce on Thanksgiving how the supervisors will be identified.
We are planning to work in two hour shifts, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.Please finish your shift when you are done with your particular task. You may be needed to work beyond your shift, but please check with a supervisor, as we want to provide everyone with the opportunity to help out.
As noted above, we would especially appreciate it if the volunteers who are on the last shift assist us in cleaning up after the event and taking down all that was set up. The more people who help out at the end, the earlier the organizers can enjoy their own Thanksgiving meals!
We are seeking someone who can film our Thanksgiving event from start to finish or some portion thereof, digitally. It can be edited and placed on You-Tube. Does anyone have the inclination or skills to do so?
We will have community service letters prepared for anyone who needs them. Please contact Mark Singer on Thanksgiving Day for those forms.
