MP Volleyball Summer Solstice Weekend Sunday (6am to 10pm) on 6/23/2013

Please join us on Summer Solstice Weekend Sunday June 23, 2013 at Marina Park.  We will set up and start playing at 6am.  Play will last until 10pm.

Game Rules:

You must arrive no later than 6am to be eligible for the Solstice Game.  Plan on being there by 5:45am.  I will arrive a few minutes before 6am.  Eligible participants (called Sols) will be closely watched by several Monitor(s) for the next 16 hours.  Each Sol must play a minimum of one game every hour except for the last hour (see below for the last hour of play requirements).  One family member or one person per household maximum may enter.  You must be on record to have RSVP'd and actually attend at least 2 MPV meetup events in order to participate.  You may leave the event grounds to get food, but must play a minimum of one game per hour from 6am to 10pm in order to remain eligible.  In the event there are more than two eligible players remaining beyond 8:30pm, the remaining Sols will face-off in a best of 3 games of sand doubles with scoring up to 11 and win by 2 points.  Partners will be drawn randomly in this order to form teams which do not stack with power.  Experience players will draw a number and beginner players will draw another set of numbers.  An experience player will be paired with a beginner.  If there are too many experience or beginners that we cannot evenly match, we will try to draw suitable partners that are not eligible in the Solstice game to complete the teams.  Odd number of remaining Sols, MPV will deploy one suitable random partner.  Odd number of teams, random draw to determine the team(s) that gets a first round bye.  Any Sol caught sleeping or acting like they are sleeping will be disqualified.  Play will last until 10pm.  An eligible Sol or one team of two Sols, who can finish the last game that goes through 10pm will be considered winners.  If the game is down to one eligible person or one team of two players, they will play with other random players until at least 10pm in order to win.  The last hour of play between 9pm to 10pm must be played continuously with no more than 5 minute breaks between games.  In the event of no winner, see official rules.

About MPV (formed July 2010):

Play is on sand and grass at Marina Park (San Leandro) every Sunday in any weather. This massive park can hold a dozen nets. We always welcome more skilled players (B, BB, A, AA) and C/Beginning players aspiring to improve. We play under FIVB Beach rules for doubles and triples. For 4s, 5s, and 6s, the court can play under FIVB Beach or Indoor rules.

There are two SAND courts and two GRASS courts dedicated to DOUBLES: For each surface, the level is BB/A/AA on one court and C/B/higher on the other. The winning team plays again (or has the option to relinquish to the next challengers). Other grass courts are for 3 to 6 players per side, typically C and/or B. Additional courts are available for beginners and children.

Advanced venues: Play is on sand only (mostly doubles) at Ocean Beach (San Francisco), Mission Bay Creek Park (San Francisco), Clark Kerr Campus (Berkeley), Fremont Tennis Center (Fremont), Montara Beach, and Santa Cruz Beach. We play under FIVB Beach rules for doubles.

Great day with 16+ hours of volleyball. 6 of the 7 qualifying participants lasted the entire 16 plus hour day. Playoffs began at 8:30pm near dark. A little past 9pm, it was pitch black. Holly, Leonardo (6th grader, non qualifying partner) Fanny, and Marcus (3rd grader) got eliminated the first round while Kris and Isaac (7th grader, non qualifying partner) had a 1st round bye. They then drew to see which winning team would face-off against the 1st round bye team. Rory and Sharita defeated Kris and Isaac in the 2nd round while Sheeva and Alisha (adult novice, non qualifying partner) received a 2nd round bye. The championship game was between Rory/Sharita and Sheeva/Alisha in total darkness. Rory becomes the sole winner of the First Summer Solstice Games. Sharita played as an ineligible novice partner. The level of play from the children and novice players was immense. For those that didn't stick around for the playoffs, you missed some incredible elimination games.

Update Sunday 10:20am: I just got back home, and Kim is now the lead Monitor with over 4 hours into the game. More contributions have come in. It is not too late to contribute. We had 8 players at Marina Park before 6am. 7 of the 8 qualified. 1 additional player missed the cutoff by 15 minutes. Some of the players were already on game #11 when I left. With the large number of participants, there is a high probability that we will go into playoffs starting at 8:30pm. The weather is good with overcast cloudy conditions. There is no rain expected. We should have at least 7 nets up or more by this afternoon. Hope to see you out there.

Looking for a lift for the 6Am deadline

    June 22, 2013

    • Don D.

I know I know. There is no one from SF coming at 5:45am. I would pick you up at Bart if one ran that early on a Sunday. Kim comes at 9am to MP, but that won't help you. I'll email you Kim's and Jake's cell #s so you can at least get here later.

    June 12, 2013

    • Don D.

Rochelle, you can call my cell at[masked] to see if there are enough players early (and there should be). I think only the players that are trying to win will be there early. There are at least 4 and possibly 6. So, should be a ton of sand/grass doubles all morning.

    June 17, 2013

  • Eddy L.

Don, please clarify what's happening on Sunday.
    1. Is the Solstice Game for Sand players only? Will grass games count toward requirement of one game per hour?
    2. Do you plan to start grass games at 6 am?
    3. What is the prize?

    June 17, 2013

    • Don D.

Hi Eddy, The Solstice game will be for both grass and sand players in a non competitive format. No winning necessary unless there are more than 2 players lasting beyond 8:30pm. See Official Game rules posted as another meetup. Basically, it gets a litttle competitive at this point with playoff games on the sand in doubles format. No 2 experience players will play as a team. Random draws and suitable filler players will be put in. Yes, we will set up the grass courts first so the first games will have to be on grass. First game may not start until a little after 6am. Must be there by 6am in order to be eligible. Must complete first game before 7am to remain eligible. Maximum 2 winners in this game. Half the pool goes to the winner(s). See the rules section for more details. Thanks

    Hi all,

Just a headsup for anyone who wants a great deal on outdoor balls. go to www.woot.com under the sports tag is 2 tour balls for $30 + $5 shipping for up to 20 balls. These are not the king of the beach, but they seem to be the tour ball for spalding. Not quite the same as king of the beach but...I bought 10 balls in order to drill with on the beach and to play with if I like them. Or if I do not like them, I can always resell as these are advertised online from $40-60 each ball. Price is only good for today until 9:59pm or until sold out. Hope this helps people out! Ron

You can come at any time. Probably the best time if you want competitive play is after 1pm.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
