Return to M:tG - Casual Play

Booster draft and casual play, after we put the kids to bed. This is the first meeting for a bunch of returning players from the MeetUp group, but more are welcome!

Games will run from 8pm till sleep, with draft starting around 8:30. Since many of us returned to magic during the RtR block, the draft format will be 3x Avacyn Restored.  It's new to us!

If you're not interested in drafting, you're welcome to just play and chat!

So we need a recap! How did it go and who won?

    April 7, 2013

    • Ray M.

Thanks for hosting Andrew. Fun time!! I would have won with my horrible double peddler with Grisselbrand deck, but had to go after a couple games and never even saw Grisselbrand :(

    • Todd H.

Absolutely, Kaleo. We may be doing something next weekend - I'll definitely give you a heads up!

      April 6, 2013

Something has come up. I'll try to make it to the next one.

    April 6, 2013

  • Matt

Eh I don't really want to have to buy packs of avacyn. Sorry guys, I'm going to skip this one and see you next time.

That's fine Matt! The draft is happening because, of the organizers, NO ONE has access to a cube or any other draft pool. The focus of this is trying to find a way for people returning to the game to build a welcoming fun environment to have fun and (re)learn the game.

Matt - again, you're welcome to either bring a cube or draft AvR and return the cards.

      April 6, 2013

  • Matt

hey have you guys played much avacyn restored draft? if that's your thing then no big deal, but it's usually considered the least fun draft format since lorwyn (and that was pretty bad). if you're interested in a really fun draft format, innistrad and rise of the eldrazi are pretty great and recent, and we have cubes for both in the group so we could play for free.

    April 2, 2013

    • Dave L

Matt has cubes for ISD and RTR. I have ZEN, WWK, ROE, SOM, NPH, MBS, and RTR. My cubes are 4 of each common and uncommon, and then 2 of each rare and mythic (like drafting packs). Matt's are a little more selective (he took out some unplayables). Because they're cubes, no one has to take a loss on cracking packs.

AVR is really terrible for drafting. Matt's right -- way too much board stall (games go way too long). I can bring a set, just let me know which.

      Dave -
thanks for the offer. You can bring a cube, but understand that this is a casual group so almost everyone will have to read and evaluate each card when they see it. We have no knowledge of proper archetypes for a given format, and (at least in my case) I'm sure draft and play will be sub-optimal. I can't speak for anyone else, but I don't have decks built for any format. I like draft because it seems like a great way to be exposed to a bunch of cards quickly, learn to evaluate their strengths and the strengths of the various set mechanics. When people talk in such stark terms about the quality of a set for drafting, are you considering what drafting is like at our/my level of play?

      April 6, 2013

  • Phillip M

To confirm, the host is providing the draft packs and we can buy from him?

I am still a maybe. Will know if I can make it around 6pm.

    April 6, 2013

    • Dave L

still going to draft AVR (one of the worst sets for drafting) at cost when we have set cubes for free?

Dave- *You* might have set subes, but I sure don't. This event is posted to the Meetup as a way to reach out to the other new/returning players who subscribe but who might not feel comfortable at events that demand tournament-ready Legacy decks. Of the folk who first arranged this over email, few have *ever* drafted and those who have have *only* drafted RtR block. Personally, I have this random box of AvR but I have never played with a single AvR card. You and Matt and any other Meetup folk are welcome to attend and bring cubes to play. But don't judge our fun.

The good beer selection is at the Whole Foods on 7 at Pimmit. The closest beer is the rite aid or 7-11 on 7 at West, or the ancient Safeway on 29 at West.

I'll have diet soda, tea, etc, on hand. No food provided (because it's after 8!) but there's a decent 24hour bahn mi shop in the area.

Do you guys wanna also play some EDH at the meetup?

    1 · April 3, 2013

    • Samuel W.

I was just asking because we play a lot of EDH in this group.

      1 · April 4, 2013

    • Cristal

      I'm always up for EDH.

This looks like fun, casual play is definitely a big part of what we do, so I am always happy to see more people organizing events for it. I should also say you will never find a set of casual rules to please everyone... so the general rule of thumb is that whoever's house you are playing in is who has the final say (so long as it doesn't break the fundamental rules of the game). So post up your casual house rules before the event and you are good to go! Have fun and hopefully in coming months I'll be able to attend one of your events.

Here's what "casual" Magic means to me.

Everyone's fun is more important than anyone's victory.
We learn the game by playing it.

In some more detail: We're going to make mistakes.
Mistakes in play, in deck building, in card evaluation. There will be takebacks, and blowouts, and hilarious trainwrecks.

We don't know all the rules.
Anyone can ask questions about rules or interactions at any time. No combat step, match or draft is more important than having everyone feel comfortable learning and playing the game.

We speak as plainly as possible.
When we use keywords or card names in conversation, we're always happy to add in explanatory text. UWB > Esper

    We are our own metagame.
Knowledge of dominant ProTour decks or card synergies is not a perquisite for enjoyable play. We're excited to see those things on our tables, where we can experience them directly and learn from them. Casual magic doesn't demand a time commitment outside of actually playing.

This is an awesome mission statement. Exactly the type of format I am looking for!!!!

      April 3, 2013

    • Todd H.

Holy cr*p, we have a mission statement! FEAR THE MISSION - FEAR IT!!!

      April 4, 2013

  • Nate S.

I enjoy constructed. I have several constructed decks, but I mostly stick to modern and standard. I have almost nothing that would be considered "legacy", but I don't mind mixing the playing field (e.g. people playing with modern and legacy and standard at the same time).
I don't really worry much about banned cards, unless it ends up being endless turn loops or infinite combos where everyone sits and does nothing while the other person takes eleventeen turns, gains 850 life and then channel fireballs everyone... Not to say that I don't have a few infinite decks, but not nearly as epic as playing with broken legacy stuff hah! Just not every game is all!

I know most of the banned list, and a lot of them are banned with good reason. When I play against (or with) those cards, its fun for a chuckle, and then it's usually like "ok... now we all know why this was banned... let's not play that deck anymore!", but it's all in good fun in my opinion!

That's a good summary. I like the game, but I don't have any decks built. I don't mind people playing with decks that break formats, but in most cases I don't have fun playing against those decks.

      April 3, 2013

  • Samuel W.

What kind of casual constructed are you guys cool with? Are you aware of and do you play with any banned lists?

    April 3, 2013

  • Matt

Constructed, it's an interesting set. Limited, it's just a bear.

    April 3, 2013

  • Matt

There is a ton of lifegain and board stall, so the games go really long and tend to be determined by who has the biggest bombs. Also just very few playables so not many draft decisions to be made. Up to you guys but I could def bring a cube.

Nice to have you joining in, Eric, Sam and Matt! We just started to get this group gathered up last week. Lots of email chatter, but this will be our first get together.
Feel free to hit me up at [masked]. I'm trying to keep everyone looped in on this gang of 'casual' players - we hope to make it a regular thing with a tight group!

    April 2, 2013

  • Phillip M

Tentative for now. Hopefully will be able to attend!

There's plenty of street parking - No meters, no permits, no problem!

    April 2, 2013

Gigidy...hey, what's the parking situation like? Plenty of street parking?

    April 2, 2013

Looks fun, wish I could come!

Wish I was going! Have fun you guys. I will definitely make the next one.
